Karato Market is right in front of you if you cross the Kanmon Straits by boat from Mojiko Retro in Kitakyushu.
This time, I went by car through the Kanmon Tunnel, but there was a traffic jam at the market's parking lot. If you're going to Magan Street, I recommend checking the opening hours before going.
Be careful during the Obon holidays.

I went on a Monday around lunchtime. I knew it would be busy, but since it's a market, the morning activity had died down and most of the stores were closed.
But I was able to experience the atmosphere of a seafood market, and saw signs for "fugu," a luxury fish that represents Shimonoseki, here and there.
However, this is also a "tourist market," so I wish they'd taken that into consideration when operating the store.

We went there early on a Sunday morning, but it was already full. There was sushi everywhere.
They also had crab soup and fried fish. The price was reasonable. There was a wide variety.
It was hard to find places to sit, so everyone had to stand up to eat.
We soon found a place to sit, and went shopping and ate there again.
The second time we went, the number of people had doubled, which surprised me.

In the morning, I took a walk around the hotel. The market, which I thought was closed, was open. I had read somewhere that it was closed on Wednesdays... However, I wasn't very hungry, so I gave up on having breakfast at the restaurant. It also seemed like they could send me a puffer fish sashimi set, but it didn't seem like it was in season, so I just looked around and left.

Were most of the shops closed? Or had they closed down?
And the main seafood section had been cleared away, with only boxes piled up.
I went there hoping to have lunch, but the sushi and other stores were either closed or closed?
All there was was dried goods.
So, there was a long line at the restaurant on the second floor, so I decided to go to a different restaurant.
I didn't get to see Karato Market in its original form.
It was disappointing this time, as I had enjoyed it last time!

Lots of vendors selling good fresh sushi. Take your time and walk around to see all that the vendors are offering. Many marine products to take home and a good fish market atmosphere. reasonable prices. You can also watch the many boats coming and going from the port.

To get to Karato market, you need to use the fery service from Mojiko, not far, about 10 minute across it, you can enjoy the bay view from the ferry...
A short walk from jetty to the market, you can see lot of shop on the way. The atmosphere here is great, and you can spent quality time with your friend or family , checking out the food they offer here.
Don't expect 1st class food quality, but all is decently prepare and very wide range of seafood that everyone can enjoy.... not just seafood, various kind of food is also being sold, so everyone can enjoy their favourite meal.... beside the price is very fair and reasonable if being compare else where...so why not ?

To me this is a small-scale version of Tokyo Tsukiji Fish Market. The best way to get there is by car or take the train to "Mojiko Station" and then the local ferry which brings you directly to the fish-market (we saw a lot of locals taking this route).
At the market during weekend you can find raw fish at numerous food stalls. Do check the opening Hours. Saturday 10h00-15h00 and Sunday & holidays 07h00-15h00.
During weekdays it seems only the restaurants are open.
Our visit was on a Saturday.
First we walked through to have a look. Then we chose some sashimi, a bowl of soup, and had freshly cut a delicious piece of tuna. We joined the Japanese outside to eat along the river bank, where it was like a gigantic picnic. And as local people are very ctidy you could sit anywhere without fear of dirt or trash.
After lunch we strolled further along the river and visited a small temple.(for children's luck I believe)
After this walk we went back into the market and did some shopping, the outside hallway harbours numerous small shops with all kinds of ingredients, dried fish, ...
Return was again by ferry and train.

Having never been to Tsukiji Fish Market, I don't have an appropriate benchmark for how awesome this place is. Suffice to say, if you love sushi/sashimi and have always been interested to get them from the freshest source and amidst an immersive experience, this would be the place to go. The best time to go to the fish market is during the weekends, where the sushi stalls open earlier (a good time to reach would be 8am, when things are in full swing) than on weekdays (open from 9:30am).
The environment is lively, and many stalls vie for your business in their individual sushi pieces. Fresh oysters, grilled squid and scallop, Pufferfish carpaccio and even whale meat is even on offer here! For selfie-takers, there's also a huge Pufferfish mock-up near the front of the wet market that's guaranteed to make for a unique photo. In spite of it being a wet market, I noticed that the premises were surprisingly clean. The Japanese there wiped up after themselves at the tables situated above the market floor (where you're afforded a good view of the goings-on), too.
Tip: find the store around the middle back area decked with yellow cloth and whose servers wear yellow. Their fish slices are beyond generous for the price offered! The slices could wrap around the rice at least twice... the most I've ever seen :)

besides the famous sea market in Tokyo this seems to be the next as popular sea food market in Japan .
Fresh fish raw or cooked in preparred obentos are sold at the market and the sushi restaurants on the second floor.
Some places take only cash (no card) . So ask first how you can pay.
Take the ferry nearby to Moji-ko (5 min canal crossing) and eat their baked curry . It is a great sightseeing tool to a classical japanese city in Kita-kyushu

Hi, Is there public parking available at Karato Sea Market?
Written October 1, 2023
To go to this market, from where is better? Shimonoseki or Mojiko?
Written October 9, 2018
Apologies for late reply, did not get this message before - the previous poster is correct - Shimonoseki is nearer. It is a fabulous place - enjoy!
Kindest regards
Master Echo

土日しか行ったことがなくて参考にならないかもしれませんが、土日はすごく混んでて外で食べました。雨でなければ関門大橋も見えてなかなかいい景色で食べれます。結構団体客が多そうなので、平日も影響あるかも。

Hello there!
Does anyone know how to get there from JR Shimonoseki station beside walking?
Thank you in advance!
Written December 1, 2016
You can take a bus from the station.
Walking wouldn't be a good idea as it'll take over 30 minutes.
At the bus station, located right by the JR station, there will be english direction on which bus to take - Any bus from No.1~3 will take you to Karato Market, if my memory serves me right.
And beware they don't take electronic cards such as Suica/Pasmo, be prepared to pay in cash.

is the area open for tourist for food only on weekends ? cos saw from online "The best days to come are Friday to Sunday, when stallholders set up tables selling bentō of sashimi and cooked dishes made from the day's catch.
