We took a ferry from Moji-ko to the Kaikyokan side. Visited with two kids (7&9). Good place to visit as a family. Make sure you have enough cash (about $100 for 4 people) to pay for admission! The ticket machine accepted cash only as of April 2015, and there was no ATM nearby.... Other than that, nice decent attraction right by Kanmon Straits. Dolphin show was fun.

Very nicely designed aquarium and it's very attractive to younger children. We also loved the dolphin restaurant very much. A cozy walking by the sea or to go to the playground next to the aquarium could be considered after visiting aquarium.

The aquarium is very clean however it is sad that so many animals are in such closed off areas. There are many fish, mammals and penguins. If you are an animal lover it is not a nice site however it is in a great location and the staff are very kind.

Shimonoseki is famous for puffer fish. But I can't remember seeing so many species of puffer fish in an aquarium. In general, an enjoyable visit.

The aquarium itself is not so big as the Osaka one but it has a collection of more than 100 types of puffer fish ("Fuku: in Japanese). There is also a small area for sea show but you it's only one round a day (if i'm not mistaken, please check the schedule again) and it suit for young children.

last time I've visit the Osaka Kaikyokan that place is big and so excited but....too many people you don't have time to stay,to watch ,to really take a good look on the animals but here it's really a place for an aquarium lover like me to really take a look on everything ^^ fish and sea animals maybe less than Osaka kaikyokan but the feeling and happiness that you get from here are much better...for me under the sea should come in peace ...so i really love this place and the fee is only about 2,000 yen and you can stay all day if you have time....and they have the dolphin and seal show ^^
I saw something like this in Nagoya kaikyokan about 10 years ago ( hahaha) but here the dolphins and the seal (they speak only Japanese so I didn't get their name but I think they all do have name)
are really smart and great ....if you come with the family , your children will love it(like i do, even I am not a child anymore ^^)
and after finish here you can move to the fish market , next door
it's really convenient
I will visit again for sure

We really enjoyed this aquarium. We ate at a little cafe that had fun and yummy food for the whole family all while we watched the dolphins swim around. The harbor is clean and very nice, they also have a small amusement park next to the aquarium. We had so much fun.

The excellent aquatic show, restaurant with a view of the dolphins just over the glass, the full blue whale skeleton or the perfect view of the Kanmon straits nearby....Kaikyokan in Shimonoseki is a must go aquarium for any one of these reasons!
