An amazing set of temples. They are a little off the beaten path but actually quite close the the resort area of Hamamatsu. I loved the big open temples with the great old statues - some of which are over 600 years old. You can take photographs in most of the temples except for a few treasures. We stopped there on a hot day for a rest and I put it very near the top of my list. The parking and entrance road are a little crowded so I recommend getting there early. On a cooler day I would like to walk around the surrounding area more. We plan to go back in the fall.…

If you're in the area, by all means visit it, but not a very impressive temple so don't go out of your way to see it.

One doesn’t need to be ‘of the faith’ to appreciate the beauty of this place. Step off the busy road and you enter a world of peace and tranquility. The grounds, gardens and buildings have a wonderfully calming effect, both visually and emotionally.

Situated quite deeply in the mountains called "Okuyama", this zen temple offers not only a beautiful and tranquil place to visit but the famous monk vegan food called "Shojinryori" for a fair price (about 2500 yen). The surrounding nature of the temple is also impressive so you should take a whole day to visit. I heard that you can also stay at the temple if you call them in advance. You will have to pay a fee to stay there overnight. I am not sure of the price but usually they cost between 8000-15000 including two meals.…

A scenic walk from the road, with many interesting statues of Buddha's followers. A slight walk uphill and over a beautiful red bridge takes you to the main temple complex, which is still active and trains up monks even this day in one of the Zen Buddhist traditions. The temple was larger than I'd thought, and it was interesting to see an old roof corner ornament displayed on the ground -- highlighting the true grand size of the temple.…
