I've been visiting Tateshina in summer for over 30 years. The name may not induce excited gush, but you can find peace and quiet here. If you look for lodgings at higher altitude, you can escape the heat and humidity. Soba (buckwheat noodles) are great, and there are other cuisines as well. If you go in the winter, make sure to check the weather. This area tends to get some pretty deep snow. But there are some classy ryokans here that are worth the trip.
