We spent quite a bit of time taking photos. Saw the memorial of the young boy that passed away. The views are breath taking. Luckily the day was clear & we could see all the islands. So peaceful and serene.

Very foggy day so probably not the best time to go. Kind of dangerous drive..skinny winding road and other people drive too fast and when coming around a corner may be in your lane lots of potholes and cracks in the road. Parking lot at the top is awful.

Make sure you look both scenic views. Drive all they way to the top to the parking lot. One view is right by the parking lot and the other one is near the antenna towers overlooking Lake Campbell.

Recovering from an injury meant I couldn't hike like I wanted. Found plenty of sweet lookouts with easy parking nearby. Loved finding shade everywhere I went. Quiet. Pretty.

I loved this spot. I visited it twice during my two day stay at Mt. Erie. The amazing view of Lake Campbell,Mount Baker and the million dollar properties along the lake are worth a look from the View gallery. The approach to the mountain top is a bit windy but it wil worth every effort. Just sit on one of the natural rocks, breath in fresh crisp air, soak in the natural beauty, meditate for a while, listen to sound of natures, the wind, the birds and trees rustling... you will love it, it's a promise.

The drive to Mt Erie Park doesn't take long from Anacortes (10-15 minutes). You'll go up a windy, forested road that you may be sharing with hikers/bikers so go slow! There are several areas to go to for views. At the top are a couple of paved, railed areas with stairs that you can walk to. The trees really limit your view, though. There are trails to hike, and I can imagine the views are better, but I had young children with me and was unable to check out those areas. As you go back down the road, there is a 2 car pullout on your left - if you're willing to climb over some rocks you'll be rewarded with the best views. A little further down is another pullout, but again, trees block most of the view. If you're able to hike around the area, you'll probably be rewarded with the most amazing views, but as a sightseeing driver, you may be disappointed

This is an out of the way park that deserves your attention. A short winding drive takes you to the top of Mt. Erie, where there are several lookout points to enjoy views of the neighboring islands. A helpful hints is that one of the best areas for a scenic Vista is not at the top, but a few hundred feet below, in a small turnout.
The road up is steep and winding, and not very wide, so drive carefully and slowly to appreciate this tree shaded experience.

To get here, my husband was the driver and I was the navigator using an iPhone Map app. It wasn't really hard to find and not too far from town. This place has awesome views of the islands in the Puget Sound. Pretty interesting stuff. Best part is capturing awesome sunset views. My husband and I were here well into darkness. Again, I used the app to get out of here. I was surprised at how quick we reached downtown.
Tip: Don't forget to bring along a sweater/coat, it can get cold up here pretty quick!

Though not famous for tourists, Mt. Erie is a local favorite and the view is amazing. If you go to Anacortes area, I highly suggest you to visit this hidden gem.
Mt. Erie itself is hard to miss. It's the mountain with two tall antenna towers, and could be seen from road 20. The entrance, however, is from a local road Heart Lake Rd, which can be accessed from local road H Ave. The entrance is on the left of the road, and kind of easy to pass. So get ready so slow down and turn when you close the mountain.
There is about two miles steep uphill drive. The road is pretty narrow so be aware of the incoming traffic. You can drive all the way to the top, which has a small parking lot, the facility for the antenna towers, and two viewpoints. In fact the road is pretty steep and long so unless you're really into fitness, you better drive.
Viewpoint one is facing north east. You can access it from parking lot via some stairs to a great view of Fidalgo bay, islands and oil refinery factory. When I visited it back in 2013, the view was unobstructed. However with the tree growing, this year the view is blocked by the tops of some trees. I wonder if there is a way to trim them.
Viewpoint two is by the antenna facility. It's kind of hidden so you have to pay attention. You don't want to miss this one, because the view is magnificent. The viewpoint faces south so you get a great view of the bay, ocean, and lots of islands. At any clear days, with the blue sky, deep blue name and dark green islands, the landscape is simply amazing. And did I mention that it's a popular rock climbing spot, too?

Mt. Erie Park is in the Heart Lake section of Anacortes Community Forest Lands.
The paved road to the top of Mount Erie is only the beginning. There are also trails to the top. At the base of the mountain, there is a parking area and an informative kiosk, and the start of some trails. There are no restroom facilities however. Short trails, with some steps, lead to two fine viewpoints on the way to the top. The two viewpoints share limited parking.Neither is wheelchair accessible. Several trails take off from the road, with some shoulder parking available. These viewpoints, like the others on Mount Erie, do have identifiers. On one side of the road, you will see several of the San Juan Islands, and some of Anacortes. On the other side of the road, you will have vistas of lakes and more.
At the top, there are a couple of small parking areas. There is also a restroom. Our favorite viewpoint is wheelchair and stroller accessible. You have spectacular views of Campbell Lake with its island, some of the islands to the east, a view of the Cascades, and sometimes, hang-lgiderers and rock-climbers. Another viewpoint, looking toward the Cascades, the Skagit Valley, the refinery, Mount Vernon, and nearby Whistle Lake has steps leading down to the viewpoint from the parking area. Whistle Lake has its own trails, by the way.
On the way to the Mount Erie base parking area (or past it if you are coming from Anacortes,, do keep a lookout for trailheads off of Heart Lake Road. At the base of the mountain there is access to other trails in the Anacortes Community Forest Land. At and near Heart Lake there are more trailheads. Nearer Anacortes there are several other trailheads. Maps of the trails are available in Anacortes at the visitor center, and possibly at the Mount Erie Store.
Whether you want to spend an hour or two, or all day hiking, you are bound to find a trail you like. Some trails are nearly level, others are downright steep. Several lead to lakes and ponds. Some of the trails also allow bicycle riders.

More specifically, if you are coming into Anacortes from the east on Hwy 20 turn left on Commercial and right on Fidalgo. Next turn left on O Ave and right on 41st.. Lastly, turn left on H Ave which becomes Heart Lake road, Past the lake you will turn left onto Ray Auld Drive at the sign for Mt. Erie.

How long to get up the path to the mountain? Trying to decide if we have time to do this before the whale tour from Anacortes.

The park is about a 15 to 20 min drive from town and to get to the viewing points. I'd allow at least an hour to get there and back and to have some time to enjoy the different viewing points. I have no idea how long it would take to hike up the mt. It's gorgeous up there and I hope you can squeeze it in.
