Our first visit to the Grey Ghost winery was over Labor Day weekend. We chose to visit the winery based on reviews and close proximity to the national park we visited. Because of Covid-19, masks were required when inside and signs posted asking people to practice social distancing. Inside was a tasting room, gift shop, an upstairs lounge for adults only, an upstairs balcony that overlooked the outdoor seating area and grapevines. Live music was provided by Dave Goodrich. Wine tasting includes 6 wines for $5.00 per person. We opted to purchase a bottle of Victoria White which was described as “a fresh and fruity wine with lovely lemon overtones” for $19/bottle and found it to be good. Other wines for purchase ranged from $19 to $50 per bottle with a 10% discount for case lots. I think the wines were pricey but as stated in an article in an edition of Virginia Wine Lover magazine noted wineries in Virginia tend “to charge higher prices because they can” was certainly true of Grey Ghost.

Stopped on a Sunday afternoon however didn’t realize the winery closed at 5pm.. seems like the winery is only open on weekends and in addition closes early at 5pm those days as well.. wasn’t able to really experience much of the wines but the white chard reserve we tried was good.. next time guess we will plan to get there earlier if in the area.. didn’t notice any food fare available either.. feel a lot of potential here however not being exploited by ownership..

The cork made displays are a must see. I loved the train and airplane. The wine is spectacular and Al and Cheryl are so nice.

The person who greeted us and served our tasting was knowledgeable about the wines and pleasant. We were not rushed and bought a bottle of one of the wines we liked. It's a very comfy environment with a lounge upstairs where we relaxed for a while and some inviting outdoor spaces. Worth a visit for sure.

Visited 6 local Virginia wineries while staying in Washington, Virginia. Gray Ghost was one of our favorites maybe because the Gray Ghost chardonnay was to die for.
