About
Manumission Tour Company curates guided cultural heritage tours designed to highlight Alexandria’s extensive African American History. Owned by a fourth generation Alexandria, this company offers weekend guided walking February thru December. Our signature tour "Freedom’s Fight in Alexandria” is a 90 minute guided walking tour on the streets of Old Town which will give participants insight into Alexandria's pre-civil war history of urban slavery, and highlight runaway slaves, like Oscar Ball, and abolitionists, such as pharmacist Edward Stabler, who fought back against the "Peculiar Institution" of slavery.

Fascinating tour of the area around the Freedom Museum and National Cemetery. Linda is a terrific guide with great fund of knowledge, excellent informational diagrams and pictures. This is our second tour with Manumission. While we have lived in the city for 20 years we learn so much more with each of these tours.

Great tour. The Duke Street tour starts out at Freedom House Museum (this Museum is a must visit!). Very reasonably priced. We learned a lot about the history of the enslaved and African Americans in Alexandria. Book a tour, you will not be disappointed.

The bus tour was super. We were able to see so many sites and learn hundreds of years of history. My favorite part was our guide’s Mom adding stories of her family living in Alexandria and, of course, her church. So much history and lived experience!

We had a beautiful day touring with Pamela. It was so enlightening to see the struggles and triumphs of our people. The stories were so profound and moving. Our people are resounding, we land on our feet, we are remarkable. And thank God for changing the hearts of a few slave owners to free some of the slaves even if it was years later. Thank you for this wonderful tour. I will be coming back to do the other tours as well. THANKS AGAIN !!!

I participated in the Underground Railroad Walking Tour with John yesterday. I've lived in Alexandria for decades but learned a lot. Several others on the tour were not from here, so the tour accommodated all levels of familiarity with Alexandria.

I attended this tour and wound up being the only person on the tour (off season). Typically I don't favor that, as I prefer the conversation of a group, but it wound up being fine. Sylvia, my guide, was very knowledgeable and also easy to talk to. Definitely some information about the enslaved persons, free blacks, abolitionists, and slaveholders that should be more well-known but isn't. I think this tour is well worth 60-90 minutes of your day. Highly recommended.

Took the "Duke Street" tour which features the headquarters of the slave trading firm of Armfield and Franklin, the site of the Freedman's hospital, and the Alexandria National Cemetery. Our guide, John Chapman, was very knowledgeable and made the history come alive through stories of the people who lived it. I have walked these streets for 35 years and was not aware of the amazing history all around me. Highly recommend this for all ages. Alexandria's history is not just about George Washington and this side of the story needs to be told.

My wife and I went on this tour with our two daughters (ages 7 and 3). Though the three-year-old slept through much of it, the rest of us found the tour quite interesting. John Chapman has done some significant research in putting the tour together--and it sounds like more is in progress. We learned quite a bit about Alexandria's role in the slave trade and in the Underground Railroad--and, as locals who have not done that much playing tourist in our home town, gained additional perspective on some of the historic buildings in Old Town. John did an excellent job in engaging our seven-year-old, who was able to relate some of the discussion to what she has been learning about in school as part of Black History Month. We would highly recommend this tour!

A Must Tour. Tour guide lived in the area, knew the area, knew the history, was able to knowledgeably answer questions, friendly. The tour was nicely paced for you to take in the information and area. I did not feel rushed. People of all ages would enjoy this tour. Even though group was small, guide used a mike system so I could hear. G-R-E-A-T Tour.
