This place is fascinating to see. The docents here are very knowledgeable and share intriguing history of the place. The grounds are fun to walk. I do not think children under 15 would like this place due to it being a tour of an empty...More

We went on a guided tour during one of their open house weekends. The house is stunning but it is in terrible condition, it's sad. I wonder how much mold is hiding in this house. Our tour guide was very informative. It's too bad there's...More

This is a spectacular place. When built by the Dooley's it was probably the most awesome house in Virginia. Do not expect it to be in good shape. It is not. But go now and see it either before the spectacular renovation that should happen...More

We had the owner give us a tour that was almost 2 hours. It was very thorough and informative on various subjects from Tiffany glass making, history of the place, different architecture styles and celebrity visitors looking into existential religion . The Tiffany window is...More

I cannot believe that this has been here all my life and I am just finding it! WOW!WOW!! WOW!!! The guide we had was quite interesting, while she did have a lot of personal information of her own life, it does weave into the fact...More

Positives: zero Negatives: -The tour guide we had was not very good at public speaking, there were a lot of ‘umms’ and long pauses. She completely lost us when she began speaking about personal information in detail while on the tour. -Only about 7 of...More

In my mind it's a cross between Hearst Castle and the Rosemary and Thyme show. I want to restore all the gardens. I want to see every inch of this place! Maybe one day... Loved it. Very different from Maymont. The story after the Dooley's...More

What a contrast to the Maymont house in Richmond. This WAS a beautiful place in its day but the extent to which it has been left to such a decrepit condition is ABSOLUTELY TRAGIC. The meager admission fees can't even begin to bring this place...More

Was there once in the late 70"s when I was a teenager and received a 2 dollar tour from Lao Russell. I remember how grand the place looked with beautiful gardens out back complete with marble and granite statues working fountains. So me and my...More

Checked website to make sure it was open. Drove from Richmond only to find it was closed. A young lady yelling out the car window informed us, I suppose someone had not updated the site. It is closed some weekends in September as well. Swannanoa...More

There is not a real welcoming feel to the place. There are alot of No trespassing signs posted everywhere. Our innkeepers said we could visit the property, but frankly it was kind of creepy.
