This is a great resource for local residents who need information on our past. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, and were of great assistance to us in creating our Damascus History Tour. It's worth going here just to look through the old photos. Fascinating.

The staff at HSWCV were wonderful! We have been to other historical societies but this was the BEST! Staff helped us find a wealth of family tree history in very little time! The computer was loaded with documents and lead us to volumes in house for further investigation!
These folks love what they do! Amazing experts and Great organization!!

I had only a four hour window in which to look for family information. Everyone just pitched in and helped me so much. I cannot thank them enough for all their kind attention. The records stored at this location are priceless. This was my second trip to Abingdon looking for information. The people of Washington County are very friendly and helpful. I will be forever in their debt.

The Historical Society is housed in the old train depot in Abingdon. We visited in hopes of finding additional information on our ancestors. With the help of an excellent staff member(volunteer), we were successful! We found information we had not seen before and it was very exciting! We will go again.

Walked in looking for neat history. Sadly it wasn’t a museum. It’s a center of knowledge and information staffed by volunteers.

I love books and history talk and I found it here. I really don’t think I had relatives local to the area but the genealogy in this place had surnames that surprisingly matched and the staff just kept handing me marriage and newspaper clippings mentioning the entire family tree that may or not be related from the 1800s.

Have a SW Virginia root? Freeman’s Bureau, Slave records, everyone.

Walked in disappointed it wasn’t a “museum” and left in awe after a visit.

Keep up the great work and dedication.

Thousands of settlers passed through Washington County on their way to the new frontier in the 1700s and 1800s. Fortunately that rich history has been meticulously preserved by the Historical Society of Washington County. They have been located in the train station for a number of years, and will soon be expanding to a new facility on Main Street. They've always been friendly (mostly volunteer staff) and helpful. If you have roots here, be sure to visit.

Thanks for recognizing the value of our collections, ophitke38. We're very proud of our county and proud to be able to share its history with folks like you. And yes, we have a new building. We will be moving sometime this summer (2017).

We looked through all the war memorabilia in the front rooms of the building and then went outside to see the train car. We did not visit the Library portion.

While wandering through the town of Abingdon, I stumbled upon the historic society property. First I would like to note that the society is housed in a quaint old train depot. The second thing is that the place is jam packed with information about the town and surrounding areas as well as a vast variety of brochures (most of which I didn't see anywhere else in town). So stop in to gather some information and take a brochure or two....
