About
Maverick Horseback Riding offers unique trails with a horsemanship approach by reservation from one of our Austin-based ranches or public parks. We have amazing water crossings, hilly pastures, scenic parks and even a country road with some neighborhood buffalo roaming around. Riders will learn about horsemanship and safety, and the importance of riding in a way that will increase the safety of the rider AND the happy working life of the horse. It's not just about hopping on a horse and bouncing around, it's about learning how to give back to the animals who give so much to us. This unique lesson-based approach has been a big hit with our one-time and regular riders, who enjoy a variety of beautiful and challenging trails for riders of all skill levels and ages.

horsemanship ride
Mar 2021
i had an amazing time on a beautiful saturday afternoon on the horsemanship ride. I am a somewhat experienced rider and I was really glad to do be able to do something other then a "nose to tail" trail ride at a slow walk. they let me separate from the group for some trotting, so that everyone could go at a pace they were comfortable with. thank you for letting me get back in the saddle!

Wonderful sunset ride
Dec 2020
I took my "Little Brother" to Maverick for his first horseback ride. We had an excellent time learning and riding around the property. It was an early evening ride finishing at dark and we witnessed a beautiful sunset as well as all the active wildlife at this time of day. Cade hade a great time and is ready to go back for more and we will definitely be back out there again.

Went on a private ride with my son and we had a fabulous experience!! The scenery was beautiful, the river ride was amazing and the tour through town was a blast! Jo Marie matched us with the perfect horses for our skill level. It was a great mother and son day and we highly recommend! Can’t wait to go back

Wonderful experience all around!
Oct 2020
My husband and I are from Florida and have not had much experience at all with horses. We booked a 2 hour private ride which also allowed us to learn to do some care for the horses before we saddled up. It was amazing to have the opportunity to see how they are cared for and to witness how much the staff at Maverick love these beautiful creatures. The ride was just long enough (having not really ever ridden, my rump did get a bit tired) and we were allowed to set the pace based on what was comfortable to us. Marrissa was so much fun to be with for two hours and really taught us a lot and was not judgemental of how little we knew getting started! We want to go back all the way to Austin just to be sure to take part in another adventure out at Maverick!

Wholesome Horse Riding Experience! So much Fun & Insight!
May 2020
This is not your average trail ride, not by a mile! This experience revolved around learning what true horsemanship is and applying it head on out on the trails and down in the river! From learning how to stand by a horse and how to safely walk behind them to learning how to sit in a saddle in a way that is safer for the horse and yourself and how to safely steer your horse out on the trail, we learned how to listen to the horse and cooperate with it to have the best outcome.

We booked the Saturday morning River Ride and we loved it! The horses were beautiful, we could tell they were well taken care of. They were responsive and we connected with them well. Boots and helmets were provided on-site, which was convenient. The instruction we received was spot-on, everybody in the group was able to ride well as a result (Thanks to Jo), and riders of all levels got what they were looking for, and more! Amazing experience, would definitely go again!

Incredible Horseback Riding Experience!
Mar 2020
My husband and I booked the Horsemanship River Ride, and it did not disappoint! We've been on trail rides in the past where the horse doesn't need any guidance, but we wanted something a little more engaging. This ride was very interactive and a great learning experience for the both of us. Jo was able to customize our ride to our experience levels and what we wanted to try. My husband wanted to try cantering while I wanted to take it easy, and she easily catered to both of us.

Beside the horseback riding, Lockhart was such a charming town. We arrived early so we decided to explore the town and get some BBQ. There are several historic sites and famous bbq places that are in really close proximity. The only thing that would have made this experience even better is if we could have combined the horseback riding and town tour. Imagine how great it would be to ride through downtown on the back of a horse! That would be an amazing TRUE Texas experience!

Overall, we had such a great day. We will definitely be going back!

Amazing experience for advanced riders and beginners alike
Mar 2020 • Solo
I flew out to Austin for a concert my friends were doing just to have it cancelled 18 hours prior due to Coronavirus concerns and the shut down of large events. I was a little bummed out but decided to look up a ranch offering trail rides- being a horseback rider and owning 3 personal horses I specifically looked for a ranch that could cater to a more advanced rider instead of "walk only single file across flat ground" beginner ish type rides. I came across Mavericks and made a rsvp for the next morning slot for the river ride, not really knowing what to expect but decided to give it a go.
Once i got there i went to the office, instructed to wash and scrub my hands (up to my elbows and underneath my nails) to prevent possible spread of germs with the animals or other riders on the trail- while some may find it off putting i thought it was great that they were being proactive about the current health crisis- even going so far as to no longer shake hands but bump boots or wave instead to prevent hand to hand contact w/one another. They also disinfect all rental helmets/boots (another plus, wide variety of helmets and boots of all sizes for any guest that doesnt have the proper gear with them) after each ride.
I met the owner, Jo Marie, told her about my riding experience and she was happy to match me with a horse that suited my experience level perfectly- a cute little chestnut gelding named Rusty. He's a younger horse, with a bit of spunk to him, which i absolutely loved. The others in my group were of various levels of beginner/novice and they were also matched accordingly (in my eyes anyway, the riders weight-horse size was always taken into consideration, ex petite riders on more petite horses, huskier riders;larger horses. They do have a weight limit in place in the horses best interest which i think is great.
We started the session off with a horse care learning session for the beginners, myself being more advanced spent most of my time taking care of rusty and adjusting the stirrups and cinch to my liking, which i didnt mind doing at all- i prefer being hands on. My personal experience may be different than most first timers due to my experience level (20+ years)
I asked Jo Marie if she needed any assistance and she offered me more ride time if i could help with some barn/trail jobs and i gladly accepted. So, i helped the beginners mount their horses, then got on rusty. A few regulars of Mavericks joined us and acted as guides in addition to Jo. I spent about half my ride with the group, trotting or cantering up hills where the novice riders were instructed on how to properly hold the reins and how to balance up/down hills for the sake of the horses balance and stability, i think its a great type of experience for beginners as a witness to how happy they all seemed at the end! Around the midway point Jo marie and I splintered off from the group where i got to do the more advanced trail riding- trotting and cantering across open fields and even swimming in a river. It was so much fun! Speaking of water, there were water troughs throughout the property where the horses got to stop and rest and rehydrate.
When we got back to the ranch i helped with a few barn chores and then a few hours later did the same thing with another group, this time on a sweet mare, i think her name is Ellie May, she was calm cool and collected and sooo smooth to trot and canter being a gaited breed (Tennessee walker) she had the most calming and gentle aura to her- falling asleep on me as i brushed her before and after tacking her up , lip drooping a little. She was an absolute sweet heart.
We got back from that ride and i helped with a few more chores before having to call it a day to meet some friends for dinner in Dallas (4 hours away) but i decided to extend my stay by a day and came back the next day to do the same thing! This time i rode rusty again, but got to pony this sweet 2 year old filly named charlotte. Both of them were so well behaved, i couldn't believe charlotte was so young and so well trained already but its clear that just spending 2 days there Jo runs an amazing business and knows her stuff. The horses are well fed, happy, and thriving and their health always comes first. I love it when businesses put their animals first. Its great for everyone, kids and adults alike. I highly recommend people go visit!!

Fantastic horseback riding experience!
Feb 2020
My best friend and I came all the way from Boston to Austin by car, aka road trip:) While being on a passenger seat at some point, I did the extensive research on horse ranches in the area. If you plan to spend just a few days in Austin, you want to pick the right farm for you and your family. So, let me make your choice easier - this is the place to be!!!
The reservation was made online and the stuff got real. I was so excited to arrive to the farm the next morning that I woke up an hour before my alarm! Fast forward, I ended up spending two days at the ranch instead of 2 hours.
Jo Marie, beautiful manager and trainer, shared the important aspects of horsemanship and gave good instructions during the ride. I must say, she was firm, straightforward, yet very gentle, fair and understanding. During our private 2 hour lesson, Jo Marie took to me the most beautiful parts of Lockhart region including the fields, side roads, forest and river, - totally new experience and forever lasting memories, all supported with good directions and tips.
If you are a beginner, you can learn the basics; should you have some prior horseback riding knowledge, you can explore and challenge yourself to the greater level of new skills. Have an open mind and open heart and you will get the most out of Maverick Horseback Riding Farm trip.I would add, if you love goats, donkey, dogs and cats, you will find the most loving and friendly ones there! We will be for sure back :)

Darina, I'm so happy Maverick's was able to really "make your day," because you made mine! I so much enjoyed meeting with you and having a few really incredible rides to remember you by. It pleases me that you noted the "firm but gentle" aspect of my tone. Explaining to people --students, guest riders, trainers-- the "firm but gentle" aspect of horsemanship is challenging. How can one be firm and gentle at the same time? It's fascinating! Thank you got taking the time to write about your experience. I would love to see you again, and we can check out all the other amazing trails in the area. Keep us posted on your return!

Amazing private ride
Dec 2019 • Couples
Firstly, what an amazing experience we had at Maverick horse back riding! Our guide Brielle was more than we could have wished for, she was attentive to our needs as a beginner and experienced rider, informative and very kind! Her knowledge of each horse enabled her to successfully choose the perfect horses for us helping the ride go as smooth and as fun as possible! We created some amazing memories on a beautiful ride on well trained, clearly well looked after horses.
We can’t wait to be back in Lockhart and back riding at Maverick with Brielle (and her sweet daughter).
Thank you!
Megan and Jordan.
