- Ace5150Nuneaton, United Kingdom112 contributionsNo bats, but a relaxed vibe.Visited the fabled Bat bridge at 18.30, plenty of time to get a good spot. Within 15 minutes, there were lots of others all waiting for the thousands of bats to emerge. Sunset was beautiful, and new friends were made as we waited...........and waited. At 19.45, it was quite dark and no bats to be seen, many simply given up. Lots were disapponted, including myself, BUT I think some DID see bats with infrared lighting on their phones, but not me. Still, it was a lovely and relaxing 90 minutes, and the sunset over Austin was beautiful.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 9, 2023
- Russell APortland, Oregon217 contributionsDon't wait until OctoberI want to try again. On October 4th, there weren't very many bats and they didn't rush out all at once. There were bats for sure, but they were sneaking out instead of flocking out. It was still like 95 degrees while I waited and waited and waited and waited. Go earlier in the summer.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 12, 2023
- Austin Bat GuideAustin, Texas1 contributionEnchanting Bat Experience!Enchanting experience watching the Congress Avenue Bats is a must-do activity for locals and visitors alike. The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America, primarily consisting of Mexican free-tailed bats. These bats migrate to Austin from Mexico each spring, creating a seasonal spectacle that attracts thousands of spectators.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 18, 2024
- PipPaul WBuckfastleigh, United Kingdom1,928 contributionsFun enoughWe had been guided that the bat's usually appear around 20 mins before sunset. The night we went it wasn't until 20 mins after when they started to appear. Yes thousands of the. - varnesl0ngWheaton, Illinois13 contributionsAMAZING EXPERIENCEVery cool experience! Weather will dictate if you see any bats. INT: If you are standing on the east side of the bridge, stand directly to the right of the 2nd street light & look down. Bats had to fly around the post of the light & were easily seen right below you. There is info on an Austin Bat Refuge page of daily predictions on bat flights.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 16, 2024
- Louis FAltus, Oklahoma1,200 contributionsVisit the Austin Bat Refuge website for infoIf the bats fly it will be a cool experience but there is no guarantee. Get there early, because parking can be an issue. The bats do not fly every night so it is a little bit of a gamble but the Austin Bat Refuge website has a 7 day tracker that tells you what the bats have done the previous week, which can help with planning. It also talks about the conditions most favorable to them flying.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 21, 2024
- California_momofsix1,123 contributionsCheck the Bat Refuge Website to predict how many bats will emergeVisited in April and crowds waiting for the bats to emerge were huge (post eclipse crowds). I thought it felt too cold to me for bats, but seeing how many people crowded the bridge, and both shores on either side of the bridge, I figured they must know something I don't. Nope, many more people than bats emerged that night. We did see a few bats, especially when looking into the lights of the hotels and you can hear their squeaks. I would recommend checking the Bat Refuge website, they do a nightly prediction of what you might see. Would love to come back in summer and try again. We found some cheap street parking along the side streets on the North side.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2024
- YotaPowerGuilford, Maine974 contributionsA very unique experience when the bats come out!It rained earlier in the day but the bats still came out. We didn’t see then cloud like you see in some pictures, but they were active under the bridge and there were thousands of them. A must do near sunset if the weather is right. We loved it!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2024

We went first week of August 2022. I've been before, but this was the best experience. We booked a bat watching cruise w/ Capital Cruises, so watched from under / near the bridge from a boat. Due to the drought and the bats being hungrier they flew out earlier so it was lighter outside than usual. So while it is a sad reason, it did help us get some great views and photos. This time there were a TON of bats! it was so cool to watch them fly out and if you do have the opportunity to use one of the tour companies you won't regret it, lots of great info. Our Cap Cruises tour guide Beck was great and very knowledgeable and had interesting info about the bats as well as other birds we saw, and even some Austin history and city tour type info about the buildings we can see from the water. He was knowledgeable and interesting and a safe driver. And if you are at all concerned about the bats, like think it might be scary, it is NOT scary at all. They are very focused on finding food and not at all interested in us. They fly out just like the photos show, and then will split up a bit as the move away from the bridge, some continuing down river, some going toward the trees. They are really fun and interesting to watch. We went first week of Austin 2022, so based on when they have their babies, we had lots of young'uns flying, they were fun to watch. For example they got a bit off track, and then corrected themselves and rejoined the big group. This is a really cool thing to do for both tourists and locals, anyone who is visiting Austin during bat season (look it up online, I think it's Spring to Fall) it is definitely worth doing, and fun for all ages. There are also hotels and restaurants near the Congress bridge where you can watch from patios / balconies, but plan ahead as they fill up. I'm pretty happy with our boat cruise, if we do it again we will try the kayaks but we are very happy with the cruise we did and I recommend it.

I have stood there on the bank twice. Waited to catch a glimpse in a spot with a view. We cannot predict the bats when they come and stay. It is a beautiful sight at any time when just spotting 5 or 6, and become amazed as the numbers increase to hundreds. The bats when they arrive and stay, will be broadcast to all who listen. The flying event will last many weeks, so the vacation visit can and should be easily planned.

Congress Bridge was wonderful! Just before dusk came, we gathered on the lawn with a perfect view of the bridge. Everybody there was excited at the opportunity to see the bats spectacular! The Austin Bat Refuge had a table set up with information, a rehabilitated bat to be released that night, and two very knowledgeable and friendly experts. At about 9:20, after dark, the bats came flying out at a continuous rate.
Tips:
Bring lawn chairs or blankets for the wait.
Don't get discouraged if it gets dark before the bats come out...they will come out!
At dark, stand beneath the bridge on the footpath. As you look up into the street lights above you will see the "show"!
Bring a few dollars for some ice cream from the ice cream truck.

Capital Cruises’ Internationally Famous Bat Watching Tour was our means to see the bats swarm from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. We easily found a free parking place near the river and walked to the cruise boat dock. The bat cruise was on a flat pontoon boat. We sat on black plastic chairs, there were about 40 of them on board. Captain Alec got underway and arrived at the Congress Ave Bridge at the perfect time, just as the bats were emerging from the narrow heat expansion slits on the underside of the bridge structure. Apparently, perfect nesting habitat for the Mexican Freetail Bats. We were entranced to watch the swarms of bats fly away from the bridge and along the treeline to the east. We were informed that there were about 2.5 million bats heading out for the night of feeding on insects. Then the captain took us on a trip up the river, giving a descriptive commentary on all the buildings and shore side sights. It was extremely interesting and entertaining. In addition, we were treated to a beautiful sunset, the twilight reflecting off the city's buildings. Captain Alec was a great tour guide and made the entire experience fun and entertaining!

Amazing event! We watched on the bridge, and I can only imagine what it would have been like viewing from the boats / kayaks!
Note: this early in the season you do not need to arrive until closer to sunset. We were there WAY TOO EARLY. Our 8 year was getting impatient. Bring chairs if you plan to arrive early. She did say that “Patience Pays” once the bats started leaving the underside of the bridge.

Don't feel you have to be on the bridge or under the bridge to see this. If you are standing ANYWHERE within any eyesight of the bridge, you will catch it. The bats emerge , looking like the bridge is spilling black liquid into the air. It is Millions and millions of bats and probably takes >30 minutes from beginning to end. Worth seeing once, but don't need to go back again.
It all started about 20 minutes after sunset.

The best show in Austin happens without fail at sundown from late March to early fall. Go to the Congress bridge towards the middle of the bridge facing east. You will see 1.5 million Mexican free tailed bats swarming and flying eastward looking for insects. The bats reside under the eaves of the bridge during the day and fly out in swarms every sundown. It is quite a sight attracting a loyal fan base of humans which number in the hundreds.

It is really amazing to watch all the bats come out- just at sunset, so be sure you watch the time. It takes about 5-10 minutes for them to come out and they are synchronized, so it is so fun. They are tiny bats, they do not get near you, they consume 20k pounds of insects every night and they fly in a pattern all together about 2 miles up the river. Amazing!

We went in mid Nov and weren't sure when the bats would come out. The night we went, they came out about 6 PM. You will know the timing is close when the bat tour boats start amassing near the bridge also. Really cool sight when the bats all emerge. Takes about 20 minutes and the tour boats usually shine a colorful light so you can see them. I recommend the view from the base of the bridge as opposed to from the bridge.

Get here early. The bridge will be packed of people even before the sun begins to go down. Once the bats start flying out from under the bridge they come out so fast. It's amazing to see all of them flying around. Be sure to look out into the distance because in about 5 minutes after starting you will see clusters of them far away where they flew after leaving the bridge and all you see if black clusters. Neat to see at least once.

Since the swarms of bats fly over the boats during the tour, and sometimes droppings land on the tour participants, is there a risk of viruses spreading?
Written April 27, 2020
This is quite possibly the strangest "what-if" question I've seen. No, there is no significant danger from guano drops...

We will be visiting on October 8th. What time should we arrive at the bridge to see the bats?
Written October 2, 2019
Same. Two parking garage. The Hayatt is best option but there is another very close by. Pay at spit with your phone & credit card and it’s very short walk to the south side of bridge. Be sure to head toward middle of bridge where the black sign is. We arrived about 45+ before sunset

It’s a possibility of rain tonight, will the bats still fly? Thanks
Written June 6, 2019
One note - if you are not from Texas and rain is forecasted - plan for "real" rain. It does not rain as frequently as it does for example in the northwest; but when it rains it can really come down with as much rain in a few hours as the get over weeks elsewhere. This is often paired with higher winds. The bridge is pretty exposed so if you go , maybe wit to park and pay for parking until closer to sunset when bats come out and weather forecast is better confirmed. As to whether rain affects the bats - I assume because they fly with "radar" that it would - especially if it is intense - but this is conjecture on my part.

What time do we need to be there to see the bats? We are going to go on April 16.
Written April 15, 2019
Oh I’m so sorry for not getting back to you.
I was not informed that there was a question waiting.
As far as I know dusk is when they fly out. It’s also seasonal, when we were there we were told only the males fly out then.
Again hope you had a good time. Austin is wonderful.

I preferred taking a walk from both sides of the river and the view from the top of the bridge this will give you some nice pictures that will be a lot better than the views from the boat. However the guided boat would give some details about the bats.
