Shopping and dining options are not too difficult to find when you’re in a large city or a suburb of a large city. On a recent excursion to the Dallas suburb of Arlington, I found myself staying at a hotel that just happened to have a large, outdoor shopping mall next door. That shopping center is Arlington Highlands.
Arlington Highlands is an outdoor shopping mall and that means, of course, that all of the walking is done outside, as opposed to the interior confines of an indoor shopping mall. This can be both good and bad, depending on the weather. There are a good deal of stores, restaurants, and a movie theater here, just be prepared to walk, because the places are not necessarily all that close together.
The shops at Arlington Highlands are moderate to upscale. You aren’t going to find any discount stores here, nor will you find any fast food restaurants. This is not a place to visit if you’re looking for bargain prices, as most of the stores lean in a more expensive direction.
My least favorite aspect of Arlington Highlands is the parking. I was nearby so for my first visit here, I walked with my kids from our hotel. It was then that we discovered that there was a little more walking involved than we preferred, so when we came back later that day, we drove instead. The entrances and exits to the area are limited, also. I think it would be a good idea to build a parking garage, since it would help to alleviate parking issues.
Outdoor shopping malls have their merits and Arlington Highlands is a respectable place for strolling around and looking for things to buy and places to eat. The location next to Interstate 20 is convenient and there are some decent natural spaces and fountains, but the parking and walking make it only an average shopping center overall.

I noticed that the "poor" reviews of this shopping center come from the locals, and one scared soul from Idaho. I must admit that made me laugh. So, to set the record straight for out-of-towners... (because, let's face it, if you are from Arlington, you've already been here and don't need to read this review).
In the Beginning: The Highlands used to be a lovely, lush, green stretch of lawn with Stonehenge-like stones as an art piece (called Caelum Moor), memorial. It was supposed to be a 340-acre business park, but the bottom fell out of the economy and the stones were put in storage until The Cowboy stadium was built, with its attached park.
Then: The Highlands shopping area was created, supposedly as a faster shopping alternate to the Parks Mall, which is the next exit up the highway. The Highlands was designed as sort of an old fashioned strip mall, that you can park in front of the store you are looking for, grab and go.
Now: It has grown to a huge sprawling tract of stores and restaurants with challenging parking.
For food, you have about 20 restaurants to choose from. Multiple steak places, Mexican, Chinese, Sushi, BarBQue, home cooking, fondue, burgers, etc. Most have outside eating areas (a rarity in Arlington.) On a lovely day, Gloria's patio can't be beat for Latin food, people watching, great cocktails, chips and black bean dip and the strongest cross breeze in Arlington. There are coffee, ice cream and frozen yogurt stores as well as the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Shop. For quick food, I'd recommend Pot Belly Sandwich shop or McAlisters. For breakfast, try Mimis.
For Shopping: There are a couple of choice large stores, like Bed,Bath and Beyond, Petsmart, Jo Ann Fabrics and a Container Store. (no Walmart or Lowe's or Home Depot or any of the other Institutional Big-Box stores.). There are a number of chain stores, Lane Bryant, Old Navy, Alta Cosmetics, and GNC for example.
But, the best choices are the stores that are harder to find or one-offs. Bella Vita Olive Oil is like a Baskin and Robbins of Olive Oils and Vinaigrette. (who knew there were so many flavors?). Next door is Penzey's Spices. Music & Arts is for musicians, Charming Charlie's is for every jewelry loving woman on the planet. James Avery for the upper end of the jewelry scale with one-of-a-kind pieces. Rally House is a good place to get Texas and Texas team memorabilia. Kirklands is a fun home decor store and World Market is just fun. Check out their international foods and chocolates in the back.
Insider Information:
Saturday nights are nuts. Everyone goes there to eat or to see a movie at the Studio Movie Grill. Do yourself a favor and skip the regular entrance (by Wendys). Get off I-20 onto Matlock and turn right onto Highlander (Costco will be on your left). Go past the signs that say "Joanns/Petsmart" to the next 2 unmarked entrances. (the one after the Joanns sign will be for Glorias, Blackeyed Pea and Louie's Piano bar area. The second one is newer and almost no one takes that entrance). If you go in that way and backtrack through the strip to the right of you, you will find much better parking and skip the entrance bottleneck.
There are sidewalks in groups, but many of the restaurants are free standing and you'll have to walk across the parking lot. It is best to park in the general direction of where you will be going. There are two main strips of stores. If you park close to the front of World Market, you can reach everything without too much walking. If you try to park on the inner loop around the stream/park, you'd better have your parking fairy with you.
And that scary sign that says "Lock your doors and hide your valuables"...That's just good advice anyway. (we can't all live in Idaho :)
Enjoy

This is an outdoor shopping mall with a large variety of shops from small boutique to big box stores such as James Avery to Bed, Bath & Beyond and Container Store. Those shops are coupled with and equal number of restaurants from fast food such as McAlister's and Pot Belly soups and sandwiches to P.F. Chang's, Chuy's, Gloria's and the like. Our personal favorite is BJ's Brewhouse that has an incredibly varied and delicious menu items.

Lots of retail stores, boutiques, restaurants and shops. If you are looking for it, it is probably there, somewhere. From steak to sofas, coffee (Sbucks) to cologne you should find what you are looking for and all within walking distance of each other.

A great variety of shopping and dining, a little distance from the busy Cooper Street corridor. Movie theater and comedy club also. Exit Matlock from I-20.

In and out access is horrible. The parking lot is just a big old mess. They should have put the stores closer together and had parking garages. You cannot walk from store to store, you have to drive. It’s not safe and it’s a pain.

Went to the movies, had a great dinner and picked up some supplies for a craft project. All of this we did at the Highlands. Has numerous places to eat with lots of different menu options. From steaks, chicken to pizza or hamburgers, you can get it all.

This is one of my favourite shopping spots- My husband and I visit here frequently; you can pick up basics you need, clothing, dinner and catch a movie all within a few "blocks". Cost Plus world Market is a favourite stop when shopping here.

It is a nice place to shop or take a break from shopping. Some eating places have patios where you can sip on a coffee or gab a bite, if the weather permits it. With direct access to I-20, and being very close to the Parks Mall, I think it is a good shopping-stopping point. The traffic is not any better or worse than what most shopping centers can offer. I highly recommend it, except during the Christmas season.

The Highlands is a pretty nice little shopping, eating, and entertainment district. They have just a handful of more higher end stores, but it's all pretty just middle to lower class targeted. Parking is awful, but they keep adding more stores instead of trying to improve the situation.
