The museum is located in Downtown Aberdeen in a beautiful historic building on Main Street! The displays are thoughtfully done and create a wonderful learning experience for kids to adults! There's no entry fee...just a free will donation. Great way to spend some free time!

As a life-long learner and fan of history, I really enjoyed the displays, the timeline, and the brief reference to L. Frank Baum. The wild animal display baffled me. It just doesn't fit. The football jerseys, as well, but a nice touch for locals, I guess. Overall, Aberdeen has the potential of being a real tourist draw. This museum is an example of how they will never be. They could capitalize on so much. (I think they like it that way.) But what they have is cute and enjoyable... And free. So if you like plain Jane history, this is a nice place to go. Children will like that they have play places and a life sized tipi and hogan.

Thanks for visiting! We're glad you were able to enjoy our educational exhibit, it's a great way to learn more about South Dakota, Brown County and Aberdeen history! The Hatterscheidt Wildlife Gallery has an informative narrative/handout available in the exhibit that explains that Mr. Fred Hatterscheidt, along with two other local gentlemen, donated the building to Brown County for use as a museum in 1969. Mr. Hatterscheidt was a local businessman who did well in real estate in the first half of the 20th century and these are his specimens. While this may be of interest to locals, we feel that the wildlife display is a great way to educate visitors on the wider world of the animal kingdom, not just Great Plains bison, pheasants and prairie dogs. The Dacotah Prairie Museum is supported by the local county government and its our mission to be good stewards of the taxpayers' funds and continue to offer this free attraction to everyone. We hope to see you again in the future as our exhibits change on a regular basis with traveling STEM exhibits, local artists shows, and historical displays utilizing some of our 40,000+ artifacts.

Not much to do in downtown Aberdeen, so the Museum was a great place to go & learn something. Kids loved it.

There is a lot of history displayed in a way that is interactive and keeps the kids attention. Highly recommend if you are into history or just want to know more about the plains.
