My husband and I are huge beer fans so we were super excited when this place opened in Altoona. Unfortunately we were not impressed. Truthfully, the beer was pretty good, but we were under the impression that we were inconveniencing the bartender by being there. When we were asking about the place we were greeted with short answers. There is next to no food so don't go there hungry. They played hardcore metal the entire time we were there, not our cup of tea. We were praying for an awesome experience yet felt unwelcome.

Just average as far as the beers are concerned. A couple of nice ones but otherwise nothing special. Stopped by late afternoon. Just a few people (4) other than my group of 3. Music was loud and not particularly something that would appeal to the general public. Bartender seemed to be more interested in watching Sportscenter on ESPN than interacting with customers. Became a bit more chatty with us when he saw we were doing reviews on a beer rating app. All in all not someplace I would make a point of going back to.

I like trying breweries in new towns as I travel. This one did not make much of an impression. Like most of the other reviews, the server was not very engaging. The music was really good, albeit too loud if you were close to the speakers.

The IPA I had was cloudy like a wheat beer and had a grapefruit taste. It was ok, but I would not order it again.

At 6:00 PM on a Wednesday there were only two other couples in the place. They did start talking to the server, and he turned into a talkative friendly guy.

Matt Winrick, the owner, started brewing his eclectic brews several years ago in an industrial garage; he has now established his brewpub in a old historic downtown building. The decor includes numerous railroad items/memorabilia adorning the original brick walls, but the brews are what makes this place so memorable: Matt's brews are always special, and he changes them on a regular basis. His regulars are pale ale, blond ale, usually some variation of an IPA, and his newest is called Lamplighter Stout (Excellent). Additionally, his specialty beers are so interesting and unusual: he has brewed Squinch (a grapefruit based brew), a strawberry brew, vanilla creme ale, mallow cup chocolate stout, and around Thanksgiving, gingerbread ale. Each week there is usually something different. 'Taster Flights' are also offered (sample glasses of four brews of one's choice); growlers are permitted to be filled, except for those marked with a star on the posted brew listings. A limited food menu is also available. Matt, along with his personable, knowledgeable staff, Steve and Trey, run the brewpub. Worth a visit to the downtown area just for the ambiance of the place. Open W,Th, F 4- 10pm; Sat 2-10pm. Phone (814) 201-2827 There is also entertainment on a fairly regular basis.

Several fellow beer geeks and I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon as part of our annual brewery and baseball tour. The bartender wasn't real personable, and didn't seem interested in talking about the brewery - all of our questions were answered curtly. There was another guy working who seemed more engaging, but he never came our way. As for the beers, we were underwhelmed. Their IPA was quite drinkable, with good Northwestern hoppiness. The Midnight Carnival DIPA was over the top grapefruity and unpleasantly murky. The Pennsy Porter had an odd, unpleasant flavor - it is rare that I don't finish a 4-oz sample, but in this case, couldn't choke it down. They have a beautiful bar - I hope these guys can improve their beers and customer service so that they become successful.

My husband and I (locals) decided to try this place. We walked, sat the the only table there. The decor was patched drywall. Bartender was rude. Will not be back.

My husband and I dont just like, but love breweries. We have gone to them all over the United States. We were so excited to see that one was opening downtown. We have been to the brewery a couple of times trying to give it a chance. Unfortunately the Rialroad City Brewery just doesnt give you the usual positive vibe for which most breweries are known. The beer is fine but the servers are just unwilling or unable to relate to the clientele. I get the feeling that maybe the owner hired some friends to bartend. Whatever the reason, it would be nice if they would review their buisess practices and perhaps train or replace their staff. I would also recommend that they offer some food or at least partner with nearby restaurants to offer some appetizers. A lot of us would like to see this place succeed.

This is a great place to go for some locally-crafted beers. Very hospitable and our bartender was friendly and accommodating. They no longer regularly serve food (other than chips), but do on some occasions (so call first if you're looking for bar food to accompany your beer). We'll definitely go again when we're in town!

We loved the beer and the pork nachos were amazing! The area is easily accessible and I found parking about a block away.
