We went to the civic to see a stand up comedian. The comedian was just okay but the theater was nice. We sat in a loge at the front of the balcony. Not bad seats but not great either. I think I would suggest orchestra seats to anyone going to the civic.

The construction in downtown Akron make getting here more interesting but it is still okay. Plan ahead would be my advice. Check the website for the most recent updates. Some sidewalks are closed so where you park is important.

Just saw Jim Gaffigan at this venue. While the exterior is a little sketchy, the theater itself is a very comfortable, beautiful facility that I highly recommend. My wife and I purchased the best available seats in the orchestra section, which happened to be in the 2nd last row. When you think of orchestra seating, you expect close to the stage as in somewhat near where the orchestra sits, right? Wrong. This theater considers ALL main floor seats as "orchestra". We had to have been 75 rows back, well under the overhead mezzanine. And we could only see him on the big screens overhead...like watching television except with people surrounding you.

We took a tour offered by the theatre on a Tuesday afternoon. The cost for the tour was free; however, we had to pay for street parking which was inexpensive and easy. I had wanted to tour the theatre for quite some time after attending a concert several years ago and thought this was the perfect opportunity. Unfortunately, while the theatre lived up to expectations, the tour itself did not. I would rather pay for a tour that is more intimate than have a free tour with so many people.

To begin with, the tour was extremely overcrowded. It was difficult to get from place to place with the crowd this large. The tour guide did make sure to tell us it was costing the theatre five hundred dollars to be open for our tour, so asking for a nominal fee might help off set this cost. Our guide noted that one time there were 350 people on one tour. No thank you! It’s rather uncomfortable to be squished together like sardines walking from room to room trying to hear what the guide is saying.

The other problem was that online and when it was announced in the paper it specifically said the tour was not suited for anyone under thirteen. Thus, some people I’m sure decided they could not attend because they were not allowed to bring their children. However, on the day we toured, several people ignored this request and brought their small children and even an infant. It would make sense for the people who don’t follow the rules to be asked to leave. It’s only fair to the people who read the tour information and decided they could not attend because of the request for no one under thirteen. Why write it and request it if it’s not going to be enforced?

At the end of the tour, the guide allows the group to come onstage which was fine. We did this and right at the beginning of applause we started to leave so we could avoid the large crowd exiting the theatre. Upon exiting the theatre area a young woman handed us a pamphlet, we said thank you and proceeded to leave the same way we came in to the theatre with the group. An old woman manning the jewelry booth stopped us and asked if we were with the group and when we said yes but that we were ready to leave she got loud and demanded that we stay with the tour group. We explained the tour was over and pointed to the theatre where they were still applauding. We told her we wanted to leave. She demanded that we stay with the tour and we again told her we wanted to leave and the tour was over. She again said, “STAY WITH THE TOUR GROUP” until the young woman who handed us the pamphlet cut in and told her we were trying to leave and gave us proper directions on how to get out. Without being told where to exit, one would assume you would leave the same way you came in. We weren’t trying to get in somewhere were we shouldn’t be or go in an off limits room, we just wanted to LEAVE! I would have told her how rude she was but either she wasn’t all there or she had difficulty hearing. Either way perhaps she should limit her interaction with the public because she was extremely rude and made us very uncomfortable.

There were several positives to the tour. The theatre is very pretty and there are lots of little details that you would miss on your way to see a show or concert. There were also lots of interesting stories that the guide delivered albeit with a dramatic flair. It was extremely interesting to see the line between the non restored and restored part of the theatre. Aside from being onstage you don’t get to see any behind the scenes stuff. Everything we saw could be seen by the general public. I would not recommend the tour because of the large crowd and the blatant disregard of the request to not bring children under thirteen. If they charged for the tour, limited the number of people and enforced their request for no children I could then recommend the tour. Otherwise, I suggest just visiting for a concert or show.

On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, you can take a free 90 min. tour of the Akron Civic Theater. Building began in 1926 and was finished in 1929. The tour describes the history and architecture of this grand theatre that was saved from demolition. The interior resembles a Moorish castle and a $20.6 million restoration has been done. The theatre is once again open to the public and usually has a full schedule of events. I would strongly recommend this tour if you are in the Akron area on the 3rd Tuesday of any month. It is breath taking to say the least....

I have attended many events at the Civic and enjoyed myself. It is a beautiful theater and has great accoustics. It is one of two in the area designed by John Eberson (the other is the Canton Palace). The ceiling is a starry sky and the acoustics are great! My only complaint is that on several occasions it was very hot in the theater. The parking is also an issue now because of construction on the roads in front and beside the theater. The one parking lot behind the theater is full of hug pot holes and floods when it rains. I don;t know if this lot belongs to the theater so this is an issue that may be out of their control but those planiing to attend shows should be aware of this issue and plan accordingly. I recommend attending a show at the Civic, you will enjoy the show.

The Civic is absolutely gorgeous! Our seats were amazing and reasonably priced. Everyone was incredibly friendly. The ushers were very helpful. The theater was packed but leaving hardly took any time at all. Everything was so well organized!

My only criticism is that there was only one person checking bags when people came in. This caused a huge line to sprawl out into the street where it was quite cold. I appreciate the safety, but for a show where the majority of the audience is going to be women who probably have purses, more than one person is necessary for that kind of job.

All in all, a gorgeous building full of history and the perfect place for a great evening!

The decor is nice--statues, lights on the ceiling. Seating is comfortable. You have your own seat with cushion and arms. Venue is small enough that any seat is good. Women's restrooms--some of the stalls did not lock and several were out of order. Some of the sinks were clogged. No paper towels in some of the dispensaries. This is all BEFORE the show took place. The fake security or volunteer man was rude. I have been here numerous times before and we are told to take pictures. The people we were go to see perform tell us to take photos and post them. Once again, I was discriminated against. I am the one that got yelled at for taking photos. I was not using a flash. And i was threatened to have my camera taken away if I use it again. People around me were allowed to take photos and videos and use the flash. I was not impressed. If no one was allowed to take photos, I would understand. He was an overweight bald guy and he did not need to treat me or speak to me the way that he did. I do not plan on going back to this Civic Theater. And I know they don't care. They aren't going to shut down just because I won't go back. But it is one less person spending money in our economy. And I ended up having a horrible time here. I was actually in tears because of this "man".

Have attended numerous concerts at this theatre and was impressed each time. It’s a beautiful venue and not a bad seat in the house. If you’re unable to get seats close to the stage, I highly recommend the first row balcony. Great view and you have plenty of room with no one standing up in front of you.

It had been a while since I had the opportunity to enjoy the Akron Civic Theatre. You always know it is a beautiful venue in the back of your mind but once there the magic is everywhere. I truly think there is not a bad seat in the house. On this occasion I was in balcony three and had perfect sight of the stage. They are showing movies again so I highly recommend making time to see Elf or It’s a Wonderful Life this Holiday Season. I have had the chance to see The Wizard of Oz and Some Like it Hot on their big screen and it is a treat. Bottom line is take advantage of this theatre whenever the opportunity arises. Oh and don’t forget to arrive early as the Mighty Wurlitzer plays before shows.

My sister and I went to see Morrissey in concert and it was wonderful. The theatre is very beautiful. There are several restaurants around. Parking is tricky but look for the parking garage next to Barley's restaurant. It's free after six o'clock. I would definitely go back again!
