My teen grandsons have been going to Fort Macon since they were young. It is a very favorite place of theirs for many reasons. The education center is full of interesting information wonderfully displayed, the fort offers adventure and history oftentimes live action re-enactments, the store has several interesting items that appeal to boys, and the hiking trails enable them... While visiting Atlantic Beach we wanted to visit the fort because of its historical significance. It is very well-maintained. It has an excellent exhibit building and gift shop. The exhibits inside the walls of the fort are excellent and very informative. The ease of exploring the fort and the fact that it was free, were pluses. Highly recommend this on... More

When you arrive, take the time to see the free movie. It is very informative and will help you understand and enjoy the free guided tour afterwards. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and you could tell he really enjoyed his job. He was a wealth of information. I was here for a conference back in April and took his... More

Our last day in Atlantic Beach was spent at Fort Macon. We love history and we love old things, so we thought this would be a great place to see. The visitor center was grand and beautiful and the receptionists at the desk were so helpful, informative and friendly. There is no way to take a tour of this magnificent... More

This well kept classic coastal fort, an easy short drive from beach, is a great alternative for the kids to explore. They can safely climb and roam through the fort while us parents can enjoy the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a civil war fort. It is not dog friendly, so please do not take your pet. If you are interested in this sort of thing, if is a very interesting and educational place to visit. They had reenactments happening this weekend.

The state park includes not only the original Fort Macon, home to soldiers in the 19th and 20th centuries, but also includes a swim beach, fishing beaches and strolling beaches. The jetty area allows for some incredible fishing. The swim beach has a nice bath house with bathrooms, showers, dressing rooms and concessions.

My wife and I were staying in Swansboro and decided to drive over to Fort Macon, despite the threat of rain. We had been there many years earlier, and the state has really improved the park. There are many displays in the visitors center and also in the fort itself. It is so well preserved, and it's free, like most... More

Caught the reenactment weekend and the volunteers were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The museum is a nice addition and everything was free. For the content and presentation it was well worth it. Traversed the grounds and beach areas are close by. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or are a history buff. Very well done.
