Our last day in Atlantic Beach was spent at Fort Macon. We love history and we love old things, so we thought this would be a great place to see. The visitor center was grand and beautiful and the receptionists at the desk were so helpful, informative and friendly. There is no way to take a tour of this magnificent... More

I remember visiting this when I was younger and wanted to take my kids there. I will be going back soon.

This well kept classic coastal fort, an easy short drive from beach, is a great alternative for the kids to explore. They can safely climb and roam through the fort while us parents can enjoy the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a civil war fort. It is not dog friendly, so please do not take your pet. If you are interested in this sort of thing, if is a very interesting and educational place to visit. They had reenactments happening this weekend.

The state park includes not only the original Fort Macon, home to soldiers in the 19th and 20th centuries, but also includes a swim beach, fishing beaches and strolling beaches. The jetty area allows for some incredible fishing. The swim beach has a nice bath house with bathrooms, showers, dressing rooms and concessions.

My wife and I were staying in Swansboro and decided to drive over to Fort Macon, despite the threat of rain. We had been there many years earlier, and the state has really improved the park. There are many displays in the visitors center and also in the fort itself. It is so well preserved, and it's free, like most... More

Caught the reenactment weekend and the volunteers were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The museum is a nice addition and everything was free. For the content and presentation it was well worth it. Traversed the grounds and beach areas are close by. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or are a history buff. Very well done.

I love history and this fort was no let down. They have tour guides, but we did the walk through on our own and it was laid out so well. A great job has been done in maintaining this fort. My husband and I were both surprised the condition it is in. We would go back again. Well worth the... More

We'd been in the area several times and never visited Fort Macon. It was free so we couldn't lose! We went on a guided tour given by what I assume was a volunteer and it was very informative. He gave a really interesting tour with many facts and anecdotes from the Civil War era. There are several exhibits to see... More

This old fort was amazing as it is exceptional condition. Having had double knee replacement I was concerned with getting around but the stairs and ramps are well positioned to access the entire fort. Too many good things to say except, go there you will not be disappointed.
