Beautiful Park with lots to learn on the grounds in the exhibits. A few non functional "button tour" (press for info) things inside the building but outside exhibits interesting. Great sepia and b/w photo opps. Bookstore/gift shop could be a tad more robust but overall a good stop on our vacation list.

This coastal fort at the southern end of the Outer Banks was completed in 1834 and was the site of a Civil War battle in 1862. Now part of the North Carolina Parks System it's one of the most visited parks although one of its smallest in area and why not, a great beach with miles of white sand which... More

We had a great morning here at Fort Macon! The fort itself is fascinating and the surrounding area is absolutely stunning. The visitors' center has cool exhibits about the flora and fauna of the area as well as the history. Next time we plan to take one of the guided tours and check out the nature trails!

Great spot to visit when you come to the beach. Educational and fun. The breeze coming in keeps you cool on the hot days as well.

After we came back from our time on Shackleford island we thought we better see what they had to offer. Just by chance on Wednesday evening @ 4 pm they do evening cannon. Yep - they fire the "Big Gun" - this is done by the local Coast Guard - they give you a little prep on the meaning of... More

This fort may be on the compact size, but make no mistake every part of the fort was designs to keep the bad guys out. The construction of the inside wall easily be compared to midevil castle towers faceing a mote, adding an additional ring of defense to the fort. Overall A+

Fort Macon is a beautifully preserved historic site that brings the many lives of this fort to life. Be sure to explore all parts of the fort for many surprises. If you have children with sensitive ears, avoid Wednesdays when they do the cannon demo. The lands around the fort are beautiful and worth exploring. Swimming us not allowed at... More

We visited this landmark to take a break from the beach. The state park and Museum was very interesting. We had fun learning about the Fort's history in the museum. We also had fun walking around the actual Fort as well.
