I do love Fort Macon. The grounds are beautiful, so is the view, but of course the history is the main attraction. Lots to explore and lots of information available. Plus there is beach access right beside the fort.

The fort is kept up and visitors can explore at their own pace with many signs to explain the significance of the fort. Many rooms contain push button narratives about the fort. Civil war and World War information on the use of the fort is reviewed. The staff in the visitors center and very friendly. The gift shop had a... More

A fort on the beach...if you enjoy history, beach and views this is a great place. It has been restored nicely. We missed the guided tour but were pleased to find out the amount of information displayed gave us ample history. You could choose to spend a couple of hours or all day. The terrain in the actual fort area... More

We really enjoyed our visit to Fort Macon. We watched the video, toured the museum and toured the fort itself. This site has been well preserved. In addition to the military history, one gets a good appreciation of what everyday life was like over the years. As well, it was quite educational learning about the work of Elliott Coues, the... I get goosebumps every time I find myself in a place where good men and women stood up to the marauding menace that was the Union Army. They resisted the siege for an admirable amount of time but couldn't withstand the bombardment of the invading army's superior artillery. Enjoy the wonders of nature that abound here but don't ignore the... More
