TIP - start by watching the first rate movie (22 minutes) before touring. TIP - check out the gift shop. TIP - take time to read the exhibit signs, very insightful to the past and what life was like at the fort. Plan for 2+ hours to not be rushed.

Amazing presentations of soldier's life and garrison commander's life during the Civil War. Also interesting to hear how the fort was used between the years between the Civil War and WWII, when it was used for defense against German U-boats. The grounds are pristine as well as the fort itself. Lots of interesting exhibits ranging from coastal conservation to military... More

We stumbled upon this on a recent trip to Atlantic Beach. The historic site is very interesting. We really liked the fact that we could roam around and see the various exhibits. What was the most pleasant surprise was that they were demonstrating how the cannons worked. We stayed for the demo and it was fun to see.

One of the great civil war battles of the outer banks, on a federal park that does not charge any money [donations accepted] but has a great wealth of information and interactive displays worth what most parts charge $40+.

This piece of history is reall kept in good repair . Can you think of the solier's that spent their tour there with out the air conditioning of todays fort . It is unimanagable to sleep in those conditions also . This is one stop that every one visiting or living in the area and never been at the fort... More

I liked the fort. You can explore every inch of it on your own. There are automated narratives in the rooms to tell you about the history of the fort and it's function. The view from up top was amazing.

Very nice place to visit. They fire the cannons every Wednesday at 4:00 through the summer. Facility is very clean and there is also access to the beach from the parking lot.

We decided to tour this fort during our stay at Atlantic Beach. Overall it was an awesome experience. The fort is set up to allow visitors an opportunity to see what it was like during the various periods the fort was operational. We did a self guided tour and took our time exploring each room and the surrounding grounds. There... More

This is free and a must see...! Just a few miles up from the four corners...Easy in and out...We don't have a clue as to what it was like and you get some idea by visiting the rooms in the lower level as well as the upper level, upper level watch where you're walking, it's a long way down...
