As far as history goes, this fort has very little. The "battle" that was fought over the fort was hardly notable. However, the fort is in fantastic condition and has a pretty unique approach that my kids loved running down. The gap between the outer...More

We have visited several of these old forts in NC, SC, GA, and Fl. They are all a little different and have their own unique history. An added bit of history here is that they found the remains of Black Beard’s pirate ship, the Queen...More

Very informative film about the history of the fort and the people who lived and served. I was surprised that a all black regiment manned the fort during the Spanish American War. Also it saw action during our civil war. The place is well taken...More

This is outside so dress according to weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Plan about 1/2 a day. If you love old forts this is one not t be missed. Very educational and certainly not boring.

I was fascinated to see how the soldiers lived in the fort during the civil war. Those were some difficult conditions. I recommend that parents take their children and explain the informative displays and what it really meant to live in those conditions. The range...More

Add some history to your beach vacation by visiting this lovely fort. Facilities, including the narration are very good and the views are gorgeous. A true historical gem.

Great experience! Could have spent more time here. Video was very informative of the Forts history. I've been here before but learned new information on this visit thanks to video. Visitor Center employees were very friendly and helpful. Recommend especially on a non beach day.

Great place to visit, especially if you are a history buff. Great exhibits and clean surroundings. It wasn't on our list of things to do, but ended up being the coolest place we went.

There is a nice sandy beach on the channel where I've seen people fishing. There is no pier to fish off of. Follow the no swimming signs. The beach on the ocean side is my favorite. Normally the water is clean and the sand... More

Another Related Q or 2 on Outer Banks Drive (17 Replies)
Sorry for the long post - I read with interest roblizBrisbane's Q and responses. My H and I are in mid 60s and looking to do something similar end of May, but we have a few more days, and also we are not the type for hiking, horseback riding. swimming etc. Our driving vacations are very leisurely and seem to involve a lot of poking around little towns, no more than a mile of leisurely walking in some park type setting, and eating at "diners, drive ins and dive" type places (but I do like nice...More

Your proposed Itinerary "covers the water front." My wife would not want seven nights of different lodging -- too much packing and unpacking. But if you are ok with this, you do have a mobile trip. We think you can do the "two nights" in one location and enjoy more. Take care in booking your lodging.

Beach from Minnesott Beach? (4 Replies)
So, we may have zigged when we should have zagged. We're staying in Minnesott Beach and want to find a beach that we don't have to spend precious hours getting to. We're used to staying in OBX but driving out to Peay Island for the day (30 min to an hour) so that we can be fairly to very isolated but have a bathroom fairly available for the Mrs. too. Seems like Fort Macon might fit the bill. Shackelford Banks seems like it would work for me but not my wife. Any suggestions would be...More

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to respond. Port-a-johns aren't really her thing (my series of vacation photos of her coming out of bathrooms might have added to that) so Shackleford might not work. I'll look into both Core Banks/Cape Lookout a bit more but I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out the difference between some of these places. Is Harker's Island part of Cape Lookout for example- if not might that be a good option? Any knowledge about Hammocks Beach State Park to the south-...More

Hi everyone. We just came back from A Place AT The Beach during Christmas and New Year's. We had an awesome time! Our 3 bedroom unit was great. The kids had fun on the playground,at the indoor pool every night, and spending time on the beach. We went to Fort Macon and the aquarium in Pine Knolls Shore.Dinner at the Channelmarker was awful, bones in my husband's fish, and a bad waitress. The Maritime Museum in Beaufort is fantastic! Husband and I had a nice dinner at The Spouter Inn. I highly...More
