Just to enter the area with the necropolis transports you to back to ancient times. The ruins are kept well (as well as ruins can be expected) and you do generally get a sense of what things used to be like as you walk around....More
The Necropolis is an ancient burial ground & has impressive open tombs. It makes up part of the wonderful Patara ruins that date back 2000 years. Remarkable what humans could construct in those ancient days.
On our way to Demre in the mid-nineties, we happened upon Patara originally thinking we were in Myra. We were pleasantly surprised and spent an hour or two exploring. One of the great "unexpecteds" you find traveling in Turkey without an itinerary! I'll look for...More
