I enjoyed my two days in Ankara. It is much less touristy and much cheaper than Istanbul and although it is much less picturesque it nevertheless has some excellent museums and an interesting old town around the castle. Take your Google translate because the standard of English is not great but the locals are very welcoming and make full use of Google translate!

The castle is situated the old part of town and has many shops selling reasonably priced souvenirs. We stopped for a cold drink at one of the cafes next to the fountain and were given extra treats free of charge. The view from the top was great. As you go through the front gate of the castle, there is a shop on the right hand side selling gems. We bought a crystal cluster and a turquoise pendant at an unbelievably low price.

Not just the best views of Ankara but some of the best views I have ever seen . The castle overlooks the city and you have a 360 degree view of the whole of Ankara. The roads around the castle are little windy ones filled with interesting little shops too . Definitely worth doing if you go to Ankara.

If you would like to learn the history of Ankara, you need to visit the citadel of Ankara. Before starting to serve as a capital city of Turkey, the main town of Ankara was around the castle. Since 1990, there are many urban renovation and restoration projects have been developing by the Metropolitan Municipality of Ankara. There are many places to visit around the Citadel of Ankara such as Anatolian Civilization Museum, Erimtan Museum, Çengel Han, Pirinç Han, Hamamönü, Cıkrıkçılar Yokuşu, Samanpazarı as well as many cafes, restaurants, and shops.

The castle contains a pretty, but touristic old town, that can be pleasant to walk through. The citadel can be entered and the walls of the citadel give some of the best views of Ankara. The topmost parts of the walls are fenced off, but plenty of people climb them for the views. Be warned that there are no railings at the top so this is done at your own risk.

We walked here from our hotel, and the route up the road and through the park is extremely steep, also with many steps. Fine for us but if you have a wheelchair or pushchair, then either take a taxi to the top or go the road route to the top.
Once at the top it's a little confusing to find the entrance as people still live within the citadel and there's also some restoration work going on, so at first we felt like we were walking around people's houses! Some of that area is very run down too.
Eventually we found the main tourist entrance point. It's a good walk around and up more very steep steps to see the views. There's not much written about the castle around, so we resorted to our own research and listening in to someone else's guide!
There are a few sellers selling cheap souvenirs.
The castle is free to walk around and if you don't have any mobility issues then it's a lovely area to visit and see the views.

Once you get up the hill you will find small little tourist shops in old style buildings, especiallly inside the castle walls. There are a lot of nice coffee shop with street side seating. On top of the wall you have a stunning view of the city.

This is a must see when In Ankara! You can see all of this sprawling city spread out before you. Perfect place for pictures! The castle dates back to the Roman era. It is a challenge with the steps so if you are in poor health or aged I might just look around the many shops that spread out at the base of the castle. They are worth browsing as well.

It’s worth a trip to see this but won’t take you too long to see it all. The narrow lanes and old shops give the feel of an old town and what it may have been like a long time ago. Not as good as other castles but worth an hour or so there

This castle is awesome, at least old times. I cannot think how they build in here, too high but there were no restoration and place looks like ruins more than a castle. You can see Anitkabir but too far and small from here. Ladies selling handmade stuff while you are climbing stairs to castle.

Keyifli seyehatler:)

Hi!
What are the visiting hours?
Also, is there an entrance fee?
If there is, how much?
Thanks!
Dan

You can go there anytime, no visiting hours but I would recommened to go there before it gets drak that you can see the view of all Ankara. No fee entrance. Sunset time is the best time. If you you earlier you can visit few museums very closed to Ankara Castle and I would recommend you to buy "müze card" instead of buying museum ticket, you can use that special card for one year and you don't pay for most of the museums in Turkey. (Most of the moseums closing around 5 pm. You can visit Anatolian_Civilizations_Museum (_Anadolu_Medeniyetleri_Muzesi-) first than walk to the castle. Have a nice holiday.
