Currently closed for restoration (April 2018 - some time in 2019)
Oct 2018 • Couples
I went to visit in October and it was closed for visits due to restoration. The note said the restoration began April 2018 and would remain closed for the remainder of 2018 and would open some time in 2019. Just an FYI to anyone planning a visit. Also, Etnoğrafya Müzesi next to it was open but most exhibits were also closed due to renovation.

Love it

There is a huge collection of wonderful paintings that you can spend peaceful time with.
The building itself is located in a relaxing area.
Plus, you don't need to pay for entering.
If you visit the Ethnological Museum next door, don't miss this place:)

Must see location
May 2016 • Solo
This area holds history about art in ottoman and turkey. Of course as art was forbidden during Ottoman empire (penalty of death) there is not much art objects dated from this period. The few are Coranic verse frames etc. But starting from Ataturk`s time, there is a very rich collection of art objects. The problem about the area, it has never been really the center of classical art of Ankara. It should have been. On my last visit, I noticed some art objects missing, which has been placed in archives most probably. This is very sad. For the few that are still there it is suitable to make a visit.

Fabulous Art!
Feb 2017
Incredible art museum featuring Turkish painters and sculptors....One of the best I've ever visited! Wide range of art, but mostly modern (last century onward). LOVED it! And it was FREE!

Right next to Ethnology Museum, both can easily be done in one day. But no cafe in either. Beautiful grounds, nice for picnicking in good weather.

An art museum with an eclectic mix of paintings
May 2016 • Couples
The nice museum has an extensive collection of all kinds of art. The museum is next to the Ethnographic Museum and worth visiting as well. The admission to the art museum is free and a nice find.

You will love the atmosphere if you like art and sculpture

In a very beautiful building from 1920's, there are very valuable old paintings and statues, And next to this building, there is the Ethographic Museum. Be careful about the traffic if you cross the street next to this museum.

Huge Place
May 2015 • Solo
It is a huge place with a huge number of work of arts of Turkish paintors and sculpturors. Maybe the pieces are not displayed very good due to lack of technic conditions but the worth of art pieces is high and a rare chance to see the creativity of Turkish artists.

An excellent introduction to Turkey though its art
Oct 2015 • Couples
Visited the State Art & Sculpture Museum in Ankara and thoroughly enjoyed it. Admission was free; there was no guided tours but it was set up so that you moved through the galleries in roughly chronological order. It doesn't go back into Turkey's older past, there are several other museums in Ankara that cover those periods. It really only includes works from the 18th century on to modern day. The paintings cover a wide range of subjects and reflect various schools of expression. While almost all the painters and sculptors were unknown, the quality of their work was very high. From the work, you got a better picture of modern Turkey and how it grew into the nation it has become. The one quibble about it for the North American visitor is that there is really very little signage in English. You just have to enjoy the paintings for what they are visually.

Artistic Feast Turkish Style
Aug 2015 • Couples
We went to this art gallery after the Ethnographic Museum which had lowered our expectations, especially as admission to this handsome museum is free. There are also free lockers available to store any bags or backpacks. The first thing that struck us was the number of rooms and the variety and high quality of the art work on display. The English signage was adequate in our opinion and audio guides would probably not be value added even if available. Works are exclusively by Turkish artists of the 19th and 20th centuries with European schools of art and influences of that period easily identifiable. Using Tukey as a canvass to create these styles makes the visit interesting and satisfying. We were surprised at the high quality and inspired executions of the paintings and sculpture for that matter. We spent far longer in the gallery than we had anticipated and considered it the highlight of the day. Note: Check the hours as it closes over the lunch hour.
