Good place to get fresh fruits and fish. There are plenty of shops to buy gifts and souvenirs. The market closes early at midday make sure to get there early. I would definitely recommend a visit to this market.

A popular place with the locals and just a bit strange for us westerners to view how they store their food for sale? Pretty busy and the fish mongers were doing a roaring trade and didn't seem to mind the free loader birds? A lot of local produce on offer and at bargain prices. A good spot to pick up some local flavour.

This is an active, functioning fresh fish and fruit market. Be prepared for quite a confronting smell, but otherwise the spectacle is great. Prices seem to be quite cheap, and you can see Seychelloise people bartering over their daily groceries. Quite interesting if you've got young children, but be warned: there is not much parking around if you've got a rental car, we had to drive around for quite a while before we found some.

To see what fruit and vegetables are grown on Mahé and what fish are caught in its sea there is no better place to go to than the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke market in downtown Victoria. It is in a two-storey metal construction from the 1840's (restored in 1999) around an open courtyard. On the ground floor are stalls for fruit and vegetables as well as fish sellers and butcher shops. On the upper floor souvenirs are getting sold, especially textiles like sarongs, pareos, shirts, as well as hats and handicraft made from wood or coconut shells. Here are also offices and a café.

The place opens during the week at 7am and closes at 5.30pm. The greatest activity is on Saturdays, when the market already opens at 6am, but closes at 2pm. It doesn't open on Sundays. Here is a good opportunity to watch locals and to get a feeling of a typical Seychellois atmosphere.

The market is named after Sir Percy Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke, who was governor of the Seychelles from 1946 to 1951. With his social thinking and his various reforms he was beloved by the locals, but less so in London, who called him back. Before his post in the Seychelles he had been the Hongkong director of medical services. Arrested by the Japanese, who thought him a spy, he was repeatedly tortured and put into solitary confinement for 19 months. At least his death sentence was not carried out.

As typical of all town markets, the market is a sensory experience, from the smell is fish, to the hustle bustle sound of people trading to the bright sights of fruit and vegetables and spices. This could be an overload to some but an enjoyment to most including locals and tourists alike. A must visit, even if to just sight sea.

The market itself is fairly small and can be walked round in under 10 minutes. For me the spiders were the best part, large numbers of Palm Spiders can be seen up close and personal.

Locals and tourists blend in this melting pot, so make sure you mean business when you barter. Some great fresh produce (mostly fish & vegetables) here which is otherwise a bit lacking, or poor quality in some of the supermarkets on Mahe as a lot is flown in or frozen and seems to suffer on the journey.

This was a fun market to visit on a rainy day. Also, the produce looks great and produce can be surprisingly hard to find or expensive in the mini markets around town. The prices were reasonable and the variety was great. The people complaining that the fish market smelled of fish make me laugh.

The capital of Mahe is Victoria and this is the main shopping area. The Sir Selwyn Clarke Market is historic and well worth the visit to see local food and where the locals shop. If you're not a fish lover, block your nose as fresh fish abounds....I thought it was fabulous.

Interesting visit to market.Brought fresh veg and fruit, upstairs is really just clothing, nik nacks and souvenirs and the cafe was shut!!! Just what you need when hot and thirsty.Good for the experience and to take photos, but very very hot.Parked in sports stadiums and then a 10 minute walk.If you come out the side door and turn right a small Italian selling drinks and ice cream and cake is worth a visit to call down
