- Jackie EAuckland, New Zealand96 contributionsWorth a visit and free tourFirst time visiting a mosque. Men need to have shoulders and knees covered. Women also need to have hair covered. They provide robes etc free. Tours are free and run by volunteers who are passionate about sharing their religion. Interesting tour. We missed the prayers - would recommend timing your visit for these at 130pm. Beautiful mosqueVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 21, 2023

- Anya20 contributionsDefinitely a to-do item!Having never really been to a mosque before, this was a wonderful experience. We were given robes and headscarves on arrival and taken on a tour by Othman who was amazing. The standard time for the tour is about 45 mins but as we had questions and were able to see noon prayer we spent about 3 hours here. Othman was able to answer all of our questions and was really lovely. The mosque itself is beautiful and well worth a visit.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2024

I’m so glad we chose this place as our first stop in our family trip to tour Selangor. It is absolutely highly recommended! Firstly, ladies must be covered before entering the mosque and they will provide attire if you are not prepared. All shoes must be removed before entering the mosque too. There’s a complimentary guide who will take you in the tour for your group - no need to book. We had a very good lady guide named Fatin who we spent 3 hours with as we had lots of questions about the mosque, religion, practices and beliefs. She did an excellent job to make our visit memorable.

One of the must visits when you go to Kuala Lumpur. The tour of the mosque is free and they really take the time to answer all your questions. Besides the fact that the mosque itself is beautiful, it is also very educational!

It has a nice architectural view and its surroundings are beautiful. The easiest way to go their either from sinar kota or from kl sentral by taxi. It will take rm 10-13 by grab or my car. As i know there is no LRT nearby this mosque in walking distance.

Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the world’s beautiful mosques, some going back over a hundred years. But visitors should not miss out on the modern marvel of Islamic architecture, The Federal Mosque, known as Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan, set on a 5 hectare site, near the Federal Government Complex off Jalan Duta, in the Segambut district. It’s only a short taxi hop from the Sentral Station. It accommodates 17,000 worshipers. The design is a blend of Malay, Ottoman, Moorish and Iranian architectural styles. Visitors from all faiths are welcome. Avoid prayer times and dress modestly. We got there just before midday prayers on Friday.
Its beautiful arch is decorated with woodcarving from Kelantan and Terengganu, as are the three elegant carved main wooden doors and the Minbar, the pulpit staircase from top of which the Imam delivers the Friday sermon.
You’ll be mesmerised by the breathtaking Mehrab, a semi-circular wall that indicates the direction of Mecca, which has inlays of semi-precious stones embedded into carved marble. These glitter when lit during prayer times.
Inspired by Istanbul’s Blue Mosque and Iran’s Masjid Imam, in Isfahan, the turquoise-glazed tiles cover its 22 domes offering truly breathtaking views when fully lit at night.
At the bottom of the stairs on Fridays, it’s a heaven of home-made delicacies on offer for lunch. Food lovingly cooked by locals who feed the Jummah (Friday) worshippers for next to nothing.

Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the world’s beautiful mosques, with the likes of Masjid Jamek, dating back to early 1900. The stand out among them is Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan, the Federal Territory Mosque, a modern marvel of Islamic architecture, set on a 5 hectare site near the Federal Government Complex off Jalan Duta, in the Segambut district.
Officially opened in October 2000, the grand mosque can accommodate 17,000 worshipers.
The design is a blend of Malay, Ottoman, Moorish and Iranian architectural styles. Its beautiful arch is decorated with woodcarving from Kelantan and Terengganu, as are the three elegant carved main wooden doors and the Minbar, the pulpit platform from top of which the Imam delivers the Friday sermon.
You’ll be mesmerised by the breathtaking Mehrab, a semi-circular wall that indicates the direction of Mecca, which has inlays of semi-precious stones embedded into carved marble. These glitter when lit during prayers.
Inspired by Istanbul’s Blue Mosque and Iran’s Masjid Imam, in Isfahan, the turquoise-glazed tiles cover its 22 domes offering truly breathtaking views when fully lit at night.
Visitors of all faiths are welcome for conducted tours, but avoid prayer times and call ahead to book. The mosque is a short taxi ride from the Sentral Station.
At the bottom of the mosque’s landscaped lush gardens are stairs leading down to stalls selling delicacies for lunch. Food lovingly cooked by locals who feed the Jummah (Friday) worshippers for next to nothing. Please note these outlets may not be operating during April, the current fasting month of Ramadan.
We got there on the last Friday before Ramadan and loved the food, particularly from stall Lot 1 (BAS), run by Noor Iman bin Abdul Rahim and his generous family. His mother Zubaida, a very humble lady, is still working and helped us choose from the wide selection. The home-cooked beef curry flavoured with herbs and spices, fried chicken and biryani are mouth-wateringly delicious.
The family also run BAS - Batu Arang Station, a Malay cafe/restaurant at Rawang, about 20 km from the city centre.

It is a lovely building and my tour guide was a nice guy. Got to see a lot more than in the national mosque - you get inside the prayer hall and he showed me doing his ablutions and prayer ritual, also could watch the main hall at prayer time from the balcony..
However on the down side I felt I was being preached all about the teachings of the Koran and was told couples that lived together outside marraiage were no better than animals and that gay marriage in some countries was causing earthquakes and floods round the world and would also result in nuclear war in a few months time - a bit extreme talk for my liking!

Hi Neill.
Warm greetings from us at Masjid Wilayah Kuala Lumpur. Thank you for writing on your visit early this year. We are glad that you managed to experience the eclectic design and architecture of our Masjid, and also to observe the rituals of ablution and one of the congregational prayers.
However, we note with regret that your visit was somewhat marred by what you felt was an aggressive preaching of the Quran by our Masjid Tour Host; and of inferences that were made by him with regard to certain issues and their connection to natural disasters as being manifestation of God’s punishment. This is certainly not in line with our Masjid Tour Program mission which is primarily to create a true understanding of Islam and its practice in a friendly and informative way, at the same time to address any misconceptions from people of other faiths. Islam does not condone its followers to judge others and we definitely would not dare opine that we know what is deemed as God’s punishment. That knowledge is only known to The Almighty alone.
For your information, we have regular learning and development programs in place and our Masjid Tour Hosts undergo training frequently so we can constantly upgrade our presentation skills. We will address in future training sessions on how to balance the fine line between disseminating facts and over-enthusiasm in sharing which may lead to the feeling of being “preached” at. We thank you for bringing to our attention how you felt as we place utmost importance on ensuring that all visitors to the Masjid leave us feeling happy and with a clearer correct picture of Islam than before their visit.
We hope that you will allow us the opportunity to do by what’s right and to host you again should you be in this part of the world in the future.
Salaam.

Is there dress code for the female traveller to enter the mosque. As I’m interested for the tour and to get to know more about this mosque and the history of Islam
Written July 28, 2018
Yes, please dress modestly - long dress and a head scarf. The visitors centre provides these necessary items if you haven't got them on. They are very helpful and the tour is thorough (in English). They will answer any questions on the mosque and Islam. You will even be given complimentary booklets on Islam and the Mosque. Hope this info is helpful. Please read my review for further details.

Written July 28, 2018
Robes are provided but as a matter of personal choice women may want to take their own headscarf even if only to wear under the one provided. If I was a woman I would.
Not being a woman I do not take any notice as to if their is any signage stating that Menstruating women are not allowed to enter any Mosque, every Muslim woman knows this and I am sure there must be a sign but something to be aware of.
Hope this helps
