Tucked away in bustling Kuala Lumpur lies a hidden gem - the Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Ancestral Hall. Step inside its doors to embark on an illuminating journey through Malaysian Chinese heritage. Spread across two compact yet impactful rooms, captivating exhibits chronicle the remarkable achievements and resilience of this community.

In the first room, walls lined with visionary leaders, innovators and icons pay tribute to influential Malaysian Chinese who have left an indelible impact across diverse fields - from business to culture. Their stories inspire and humble.

The second room unravels the hall's own history - tales of community spirit and evolution that transformed this space into a beacon of pride. Unexpectedly, it also houses a marriage registration office where love and legacy intertwine as couples register their union.

While the website mentions free entry, there is a small RM5 fee, so come prepared with change. Beyond the exhibits, the hall's striking architecture mirrors the community's ability to artfully blend tradition and progress.

It is also the ancestral home of the four founders on whose name the temple is build using bricks wood and stone. It has been declared as one of the 13 must visit tourist attractions of Kuala Lumpur. Fine architecture and three deities representing three ancestors of Mr. Chan.

I do love a good temple and this is one of the best in downtown KL.

Just off the Maharajeela MRT station heading into Chinatown.

You always get a fantastic feeling of peace in p,aces like this and I love them.

Be respectful yet photos are allowed.

And make a donation to say thanks.

This is actually a traditional Chinese association hall and not a temple per se. But because of it's over 100 years of history, it has been mistaken as a temple. The architecture and intricate carvings are still amazing. When I was there, a group of students were studying. It was a tuition offered by the association. It is definitely worth the visit and seeing history, how the early Chinese built their club house, so to speak.

The Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association temple is over a hundred years old - the name plate on the gate proudly proclaims that it was founded in 1896.

The association's founders were tin mine tycoons. The history of the association is detailed on a plaque just within the main gate which says that the Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (CSSY) was built as a Clan Consanguinity Organization.

Consanguinity as we understand it, is just long form for "kinship" - in this case, of those from the 'Chan' clan. In other words, the Clan association is a sort of 'club' for those with the same surname - in this case 'Chan', 'Tan' and 'Chen' that use the same Chinese characters. Many long years ago, this association would have played a critical role to help new immigrants belonging to the same clan settle in, find work and so on.

All the materials and craftsmen who built this temple were imported from southern China which is where this clan originates. This temple is apparently modelled on the Chan Clan Ancestral Hall in Xi Guan, Guangzhou, China.

The temple is a handsome, low slung, green coloured building - at first glance, nothing very remarkable from the outside - however move a little closer and you will find it hard to stop taking photographs of the magnificently detailed work that adorns this temple both on the outside and the inside.

The temple roof is adorned with elaborately crafted pottery artwork and intricate sculptures - the detail is simply astounding. These sculptures represent Chinese gods, mythological figures and drama personalities as well - the belief being that they tirelessly perform an unending drama in the heavens for the entertainment of ancestors!

This temple is very close to the Maharajalela monorail station - just across the road from the Guan Yin temple (please see my review of the Guan Yin temple), and diagonally opposite the KL and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. Admission to the temple is free.

I had a quick look at this temple whilst visiting the Chinatown district if KL last weekend. Unfortunately it seems that renovation work is continuing, and so visiting properly was difficult. I had to be content with a quick peek inside. It does look quite attractive, but will probably be a lot better once the renovations are complete.

We visited here on a walk through Chinatown and will say it was one of the less impressive temples we visited on the day. Worth sticking your head into because it's free if you're near the area - but in terms of pretty temples there were nicer ones we came across.

An interesting building, with free entry. A bit of a building site when we visited, but still calm and a nice stop on any tour of KL.
