The Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum was an unexpected delight on our trip to Nagasaki. We were literally walking past and saw was there was a special exhibit of the Black Jack manga series by Osamu Tezuka. The curation was exceptional. We loved exploring the modern museum and walking along the harbor at twilight. Highly recommended.

The building is very interesting to walk in and around, and for the price (410 yen), the permanent exhibition is OK. This collection is not very big, though. There was a special exhibition or two there when we visited, but they were much more expensive, more than doubling the price of the tickets.

Go on a day when the weather's nice, so you can walk the beautiful paths around the building.

This museum is worth visiting if only to experience the building. It is so obviously an architect's dream project, and in many ways quite flawed. Huge glass walls, immense areas devoted to stairways, stone walkways and walls, expansive clear grain wood flooring [patina-ed into a uniform dimple pattern by the endless parade of stiletto heels] and an elevator that goes to the roof garden.

Don't miss the roof garden for a great view of the harbor. Plus the elevator exits on the roof into a glass box. The elevator in the main lobby is glass in glass, but the other [that rises to the roof garden] is a black box. It opens into the roof box and the effec of the black to light is an experience. Plus the glass box is airconditioned. All in all, an experience in non-eco-sensible, energy unaware, but still sweet. The sinks in the restrooms.... don't miss them!

Lunch in the cafe is a tad pricey, but the view is worth it. Great ambiance. Wonderful staff.

This place is not english friendly, but it surely is friendly. The art?
We caught a guest exhibit of holdings of ukiyo-e [woodblock prints; think the Great Wave of Kanagawa by Hokusai] from the Victoria and Albert in London. The permanent collection is a mixed bag.

All said, we spent from 1000 until 1400 just enjoying ourselves.

It's close to Deijima Tram Station and is beautifully designed. If you are interested in modern architecture, you should go and check it out. The museum structure spans over a canal. The interior is airy and makes you want to linger around. The atmosphere is different in the evening after it's lit up. There's an exhibition of the works of a famous Japanese art group at the time of visit (with entrance fee) which seemed to be very popular with children and families. As it was weekend, there's also a free concert at the lobby. The museum cafe looks lovely. But what attracted me most during the visit was going up the roof terrace (free) to have a great view of Nagasaki harbour over sunset. There were only few people up on the terrace. I really enjoyed the quiet and beautiful moments up there.

Did not pay to see the gallery, but no charge to go up on the roof and walk around see artwork scattered throughout the area. The view of the harbour and port is amazing from the top.Less than an hour is good enough, if just going to the free areas. Very good gift shop, excellent quality of products for sale.Weekends, in the lobby some of the local high school kids have the chance to sing and perform to the public.

This is a relatively new fine art museum that opened its door in 2005, but its history goes back to 1965 when Nagasaki Prefecture opened the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum.

Located near the Dejima Stop of the municipal tramway, the prominent museum building complex is easy to spot. It has five rooms for their permanent collection and another for a special exhibit.

The main focuses of this fine art museum are Spanish arts and works by local artists. They also have some occasional special exhibits with their own collections as well as from other fine art museums around the world.

The Spanish section has several fairly prominent works by Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, to name a few. These Spanish works were a part of the so-called Yakichiro Suma Collection. Mr. Suma was a World War II time diplomat who was in Madrid in the mid 1940’s. He not only collected military intelligence for the Japanese Imperial Government but collected many art pieces in Spain.

The museum doesn’t allow us to take any photographs inside the building. You can take photographs of Dali’s bronze statue (Newton of Gala, 1985) outside the building.

Beside the changing exhibitions, it is worth to visit this Museum because of the architecture and the Museum shop.

We were very much fascinated by the beautiful building and its interior designs but not so by the art collections and exhibitions. It is located near the harbour and there is a nice cafeteria inside. We can enjoy a fantastic view from the rooftop.

I was visiting friends and had a free afternoon to walk around. The NPAM is a real gem. Not only was it visually splendid and interesting in terms of architectural thoughtfulness and presence in its harbour side location, it was filled with wonder. The visiting exhibition of huge bronzes by Japanese artist was quite stunning and cleverly curated for the space. The huge vaulted spaces could accommodate quite gigantic and awe inspiring pieces. The permanent collection's Spanish pieces were interesting and again, cleverly curated. The unexpected bonus for me was the four piece lineup on the far wall. Two Picasso, one Dali and a brooding Miro made up the quartet. The tiny Picasso still life was gorgeous and my pick of the bunch. I wandered up to the spare minimalist roof garden to enjoy a peaceful view of the harbour. The gift shop downstairs was full of interesting items and quirky, artistic Japanese souvenirs.

Impressive building at the southern end of Dejima. Attended the Audrey Hepburn exhibition. I could look at Audrey all day and there were some 200 images to gaze upon but without a scintilla of English translation to the story boards. Guess you don’t see much Kanji at the Prado or the Tate either but there we are. Also curious omission of Bogey/Sabrina content.
