I would have much preferred seeing something else. I am not into religion, especially when it involves forcing religion on someone else, so this was not for me. Some might enjoy it, just no me.

Not far from Nagasaki station - up a small incline is the monument to the 26 Christian martyrs, Japanese converts and victims of persecution in the late 16th century. A museum is located close by.

The monument and the church behind it is very touching to see. Nagasaki has many beautiful churches, and this monument is interesting, since historically the Christian missionaries and their followers in Japan were persecuted, or expelled. This was the entry point for many European missionaries.

Take time to visit the plaza with the monument and the museum next to it if you saw Silence by Martin Scorsese. The story of the 26 Jesuit martyrs is a fascinating one.

The monument and museum are interesting in the context of Christianity in Japan. Situated close to the bus and train stations it's worth the short walk up a modest hill.
