The zoo have many exhibits that are no longer active, elephants, koala etc..
Unfortunately we found out only after entering.

Of those active, the animals seemed well taken care of though mostly caged in relatively small enclosure.

I would give it a miss

I only came here because it was included on the osaka amazing pass. The entry fee is not too expensive anyways if you were to enter without it, only ¥500.
I didnt know what to expect when coming here as i did not look into this attraction. The zoo is small and alot of the animals appear quite sad and lonely. It isnt the kind of zoo that really draws you in so dont have high expectations. I dont think i would come here again even with the amazing pass.

There is a wide range of animals here and some that I hadn't seen in other zoos before (many different monkeys, etc.). My main disappointment was that the animals seemed to be a little cramped in their cages and many of them looked unhappy and even angry. There are a few other places to visit around the zoo though so it's worth the visit.

If you are European or American, DO NOT GO. I left feeling quite depressed. Awful treatment of animals. Makes our zoos at home look like Eden. If you are Japanese, do not go but try to lobby for some change here.

This zoo is a disgrace! Avoid at all costs! I recently went to osaka and purchased an osaka unlimited pass which included entry into this animal torture chamber. The inclosures were unkept and filthy, the animals were stressed and not looked after and the whole feel of the place left me feeling ashamed that I walked through the door! After seeing the polar bear pace backwards and forwards on a cement block I ran straight to the nearest exit! You should be ashamed Tennoji Zoo!

Seeing foxes crying and pacing in their tiny cage, wolves howling in a cramped space, a seal splashing in what can be referred to as only a puddle. Elephants that have gone mad and stand in the same spot swishing the dirt with their trunks in the most depressing display. What brought me to tears was the polar bear with rocks painted white and dirty water to swim in. How can an indanged animal be kept in such filthy conditions? The whole zoo stank like feces and there wasn't a toy or friend for any animal to interact with. The monkeys sat on the ground clutching the bars to their prison. I honestly don't know how some animal rights group hasn't found out about this zoo. I will be looking into organizations to write to. The animals here deserve better. They've even got a kiwi bird stewing in its own filth. I don't grasp how you can get a license to own an indangered animal without having some sort of follow up. I left crying and struggling to find an unlocked exit as I passed more and more animals in heartbreaking conditions.

It was a casual day and I decided to pay a visit to a zoo nearby. The animals were not healthy just by looking at them. They were not fed well, crying for help and stressed as hell; especially the polar bear. It was a total disturbing journey, please do not go...

I would never go back here even if it was free. The animals pace around and DONT look happy. Osaka has been a great experience for me but this place is rotten. This zoo should be closed....its not right of any animal to be put in there.....the cages look bare...there is nothing for the animals to get excited about

Lone wolves, stressed out polar bear, tiny caged large birds, just.... depressing. Honestly I'm not a fan of zoos to begin with, but went with some friends. One friend started crying when we got to the polar bear. Poor guy was so skinny and just pacing and twitching like a maniac. It was disgusting to see his condition. The wolves, all separated, looked depressed. The only animal that seemed happy was the rhino as the handler was feeding him. Other than that, really... it was sad to see. I can't recommend this at all.

I have been travelling around japan for around about 2 weeks now and Osaka has by far been a wonderful place to spend a few days to roam and see the sights. however yesterday me and my partner walked past the Tennoji Zoo and for a cheap price of 500 yen we decided to go in. After this day i will never go in a zoo again. The animals were distressed, skinny and overall the experience was hard to handle. Not all animals were like this but after seeing the bears we had to leave immediately. I emphasise that i am not an expert on wildlife and an animal enthusiast but it doesn't take an expert to see that these animals needed more.
