I visited the shrine after learning that on December 25th every year at Shutenjin Shrine, the Yutate Kagura and the burning of votive plaques are held to give thanks to Tenjin Shrine for his protection over the past year. The Yutate Kagura started at 10:00 and the burning of votive plaques took place after it had finished. I happened to experience the Yutate Kagura at the Soja Summer Festival at Itate Hyōzu Shrine during a trip to Himeji, and it left such a strong impression on me that I wanted to see it again, so I visited on Shutenjin Shrine day. After the Yutate Shinto ritual, you are given a bamboo dipped in hot water, which acts as a talisman against evil spirits, so if you can't make it, there's nothing you can do, but if you can, I recommend taking the bamboo dipped in hot water home with you.

Nice and quiet, but not much to see. There is the main shrine, which is very beautiful and you will see the locals go to bow and pray, a couple of small secondary shrines and that's it. It is worth visiting to get to know it, it is really very beautiful.

We visited Osaka Castle, and then walked to Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street. It’s not near but we like to walk. On our way to the shopping street we stopped by the temple.
It’s not a big temple, but it was the first temple we visited in Japan and it is nice to know the culture.
This is in the middle of the city, on a side street of the shopping street and very easy to stop by. If you are in the area you can visit but I wouldn’t get out of my way to visit this temple.

I was staying in a hotel not far from Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and had a couple hours in the afternoon to explore the area and neighborhood so I visited the shrine. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, founded in the 10th century, is one of the most important of hundreds of shrines across Japan that are devoted to the Shinto deity of scholarship, Sugawara Michizane. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine has been destroyed by fire a number of times during its history, and its current main hall (honden) and main gate date back to 1845. The shrine is nestled in a residential area and has fewer visitors than the more popular known temples & shrines. It was nice to spend the time wandering around the complex which houses a few other smaller structures. If you are in the neighborhood and have not yet done the "temple tour" or tired out from visiting all the temples, make a short visit to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and the surrounding neighborhood.

This shrine is enshrining the god of study, but the head shrine is in Fukuoka prefecture and this is the shrine for that part. The main pavilion was simple, wooden rustic and solid. The decoration of the zodiac sign sculptured at delicate work decorated on the ceiling of the gate was beautiful.

I liked this shrine (and I have seen a lot). Situated behind the shopping street there is a little area of tranquality. With the main shrine in the middle it is surrounded by other little places of worship, gravestones and carvings. In the wood work of the buildings are quite a few carvings, in the ceilings, under the bridge and look up under the main entrance. There are a few life size statues of animals as well as the usual combination of Japanese mithical animals. The main gate was particularly good, still with its solid wood door and metal embelishments. Leave the Minami-Morimachi subway station on exit 4A and take the second left and it will take you 5 minutes at most.

Osaka Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine located in the Kita ward of Osaka. It is one of the most popular shrines in Osaka and the site of Japan's biggest festivals, Tenjin Matsuri which features a lively procession of floats and attracts thousands of spectators.
The shrine's main hall, called Honden, is a beautiful structure with intricate carvings and decorations and is the point of prayers. The shrine also has a large collection of Ema, small wooden plaques where visitors can write their wishes and prayers. These plaques can be bought at the outlet in the premises along with other blessed artefacts.
Overall, Osaka Tenmangu is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in Japanese culture and history. Its beautiful architecture, serene gardens, and cultural significance make it a unique and memorable destination in Osaka. It's free to visit and is open from early till 5pm everyday.

One of the three biggest festivals in Japan, Tenjin Festival's organizer .
God of academics, to serve Sugawara Michizane. It is crowded with people who pray to God to pass university and high school entrance examination. From the fact that Sugawara Mamo loved plums, the emblem of the shrine is a plum design.

Every July, the Tenjin Matsuri is held here. This is Osaka's most fabulous festival, where you can view gorgeous fireworks.
