I spend considerable time in Yamashina, its where my wife was born and brought up, I first discovered the Canal 11 years ago, and since then I spend every morning Im in Japan going for a walk along the entire length of the canal.

Im greeted by the students at the baseball ground, Ohayo to the people who pass by.
You soon get to know the locals who do the same as I do. Each season the canal takes on a different persona, the beauty of Autumn and the white blanket of winter, the cicadas chirping in summer and the new growth of Spring with Sakura everywhere.

The local prefecture have scenic boat trips down the canal, but its still so much better to just walk.

This is the common name for the portion of the Lake Biwa Canal that runs approximately 4.2km between Shinomiya and Hinooka. It has been selected as one of Kyoto's top 200 natural areas (Historical Natural Environment Category), and its scenery is protected as a scenic area. I went with my best friend to see Somei Yoshino in bloom, but unfortunately it wasn't in bloom yet. However, walking along the canal is very pleasant, so you can enjoy it even outside of the cherry blossoms.

Visited on April 6th. I walked along the Yamashina Canal from Goryo Station to Bishamon-do. It took about 40 minutes. There are cherry trees planted here and there along the canal, but the road is not lined with trees the whole way. The area around Bishamon-do is the most beautiful. You can enjoy the cherry blossoms along with the rape blossoms planted by locals in this area.

Yamashina Canal provides drinking water for the people of Kyoto. It is suitable for taking a walk along. As I went to Bishamondo, I just passed by.
