Tranquil and lovely
Nov 2019
This temple is a little off the beaten path, and much less visited than other temples in Kyoto. I appreciated the peace and tranquility, and found the moss-covered thatched roof of the front gate to be most charming and lovely.

THE FRONT GATE IS WORTH THE VISIT
Nov 2019
This is the second year trying to get the right photo, this Fall I made it. Approaching the temple, the gate with its thatched roof is highlight with the fall colors is worth the visit. The temple itself is like many others, but the grounds are very interesting.

Peaceful
Oct 2019
This temple is only a short distance from the Philosophers Walk, about half way down, so we broke off to go and see it. It comprises just a few small building in a pleasant wooded area with a small garden. Because it is away from the centre of Kyoto and we were the only visitors we found it to be very peaceful and contemplative.

Uninspiring
Oct 2019
Of the many temples visited in Japan this was one of least interesting. Mostly everything was locked up. The garden too isn't anything special, although the cemetery as you come to the temple is interesting.

Quiet retreat off of the Path of Philosophy
Nov 2018
This temple is on a side road off the Philosopher’s Path. You have to leave the path to get to the uphill entrance gate. There are two entrances - take the one through the gate.

The temple is often overlooked and you can find yourself here with only a few other visitors - or - during koyo or sakura season there always seems to be someone else visiting but still nothing like the crowds elsewhere.

The moss covered roofed entrance gate is perfect for photographing but, in peak seasons, you need to wait a long time to get it without people. Once inside, the first thing you see are two oblong mounds of sand raked by the monks and topped with images to match the season. Lovely.

The grounds are interesting, but more importantly it is quiet and peaceful here. It is a small place and you can walk through the entire area in under a half an hour including taking many photographs. You may, however, want to linger longer just to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the place. A pond, a bridge, mossy gardens and many trees fill the compound. There are several buildings which sit nicely in their surroundings. We have never been here when the main hall is open. We have several times visited free art exhibitions in the small kura - a painting exhibit once and a photography exhibit another time.

Unfortunately when we visited this past autumn one of the large trees had fallen down, whether from age or the result of Typhoon Jebi we do not know and there was no one around to ask. The giant horizontal tree trunk added to the solemn mood of the overgrown mossy pathway. There was only one monk who appeared briefly and just as quickly disappeared - the whole place somehow seems untended and left to its own will - except, of course, for the two very well tended sand mounds at the entrance.

This is a Beautiful and very peaceful place and I love it here, its very small but very interesting, when your here just listen...all you here is birds singing and the fresh air. This is my second visit the last time was 2017 and its still marvelous and so very well looked after, The Japanese have fantastic style.

There's a small pond with fish in and a tiny bridge over it & all the woodland
is fascinating

Quiet place!
Apr 2019 • Family
This is one of Kyoto's hidden pleasures. It's a lovely quiet temple. You find it when you are walking the Path of Philosophy. If you want to escape the crowds, this temple is a nice one.

Disappointing
Mar 2019 • Business
If memory from my first trip to Kyoto about 20 years ago is correct, I really liked this temple, but this time I was less than impressed. The best thing about it I thought, was the entrance and moss covered gate. Inside it felt a bit unloved and neglected with evidence of the storm that brought a lot of trees down a few months back still visible. There is supposedly a small pretty garden at the back but on neither visit has it been open, nor was there anything else that I could see. It's free to wander the small grounds so thankfully I didn't have to pay to be disappointed. It is just off the Philosopher's Path, so easy to access if you want to judge for yourself.

A quieter, smallish temple to unwind. I just wish there was a bench or two to sit and take in the compact splendor of this tranquil temple. Much less busy than other temples along the Philosopher's Path. Worth a stop.

Honen-in is located near Philosophy road and you can easily to there.
You can enjoy its quiet and peaceful time. I recommend you visit here before this place gets popular among people.
