We were lucky enough to have Dominic as our guide today. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area he took us and answered all questions confidently. I highly recommend that others join this tour to get a great flavour of what the Gion district has to offer.

It was also great to have someone to answer all those questions about Japan that we have collecting during our stay. Thank you Dominic!

Please make sure you tip your guide, they are volunteers but this tour will save you heaps of money over paid tours.

This was an excellent experience and I would recommend it for any English speaker wishing to know about the history and culture of Kyoto. Dominic is a superb guide! He is engaging and extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Kyoto’s complex past and present, happily fielding all our questions. The route talking was like stepping back in time, through beautiful and evocative back streets, shrines and temple precincts.

We had a brilliant 2.5 hour tour with Ayaka yesterday. She is very humble about her excellent English, and she has a wicked sense of humour too. She clearly makes a great effort to prepare for each tour, research into the history and culture of Kyoto, and to explain nuances of Japanese culture. She explained all about Maiko, Geiko and Okaa-San in Gion, the tea house culture, the history of Kyoto’s shrines, and the importance of green tea in Kyoto. She answered all of our questions perfectly and showed us lots of explanatory pictures from her folder, to illustrate what she was talking about. Ayaka is a lovely human being, a great tour guide and a smart cookie! Thank you Ayaka for this incredible and free tour.

Ayaka certainly gave her utmost to make this a most memorable guided walking tour. She gave us both historical and contemporary knowledge and communicated this with flair and a passion for her city. - in fluent English. She gave us many pointers as to what to do on future days and made time for questions both whilst walking and at the end. Best Wishes and Thank you. Bar.

Family with 3 boys aged 13,10 & 7 thoroughly enjoyed our two hours with Dominic in and around Gion. Dominic was knowledgeable, very easy to listen to and set a relaxed pace for all involved. I highly recommended a walk with Dominic for anyone visiting Kyoto.

This is an excellent start of your visit to Kyoto ( they do this daily seems like, but visit the Facebook page for details). Very informative and friendly. Although the group was large and the town extremely crowded we did enjoy every minute of the tour. We would have a left a tip without being asked since we appreciated the time and dedication of our guide. You should feel good about supporting this wonderful group of people!

We did the free walking tour this Wednesday with Dominic.
The tour was the highlight of our stay in Kyoto with plenty of information, a good pace for the tour and lots of cultural and historical background to the city. Dominic was great for answering questions we had about the area, living here and tips on where to eat and get good coffee!
A must for when you're visiting Kyoto!!

My guide was Don(?). I booked a morning session, and I toured with a relatively small number of people. The tour was held in the order of gion, hokanji, ninenjaka, godaiji, and yasaka shrines.

아침 시간을 예약했고, 비교적 적은 인원으로 투어를 다녔습니다. 기온, 호칸지, 니넨자카, 고다이지, 야사카 신사의 순서로 투어가 진행되었습니다.

Been on numerous free walking tours around the world and this was undoubtedly one of the best. Quentin, the tour guide, provided lots of informative and fun facts in a 3 hour walk around Gion. We don’t have great mobility but we were able to keep up with him albeit it was nice he checked on our wellbeing every so often. The other beauty of this tour is that there is so much to see and without Quentin I’m sure we would have missed lots of it. This was a popular tour and hopefully he was well rewarded by fellow guests

As this was my first time in Kyoto and in being in Japan, it was fascinating to learn about the history of Kyoto and especially of the Gion district. Our guide, Mana, was authentic, friendly, and knowledgeable regarding the aspects of the history, buildings, and characters within the Gion district.

The Ghibli store was a nice bonus to the tour, where we also walked through the store.

I'd recommend this little incursion to anyone who enjoys listening to history, traveling to the past, and social events with a light-hearted approach.

Thanks!
