Neighborhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

One of my favourite type of drinks is cocktail, mostly because it always looks pretty but secondly because of the variety of flavours that a mixologist can offer through it. For that sole reason we're trying to find a small bar in Kyoto that can offer us great drinks and experiences. Yelp (app) was my best friend when we were in Japan so we looked up a small bar and found L'Escamoteur. It was within 10 minutes walking distance from where we were.
The name L'Escamoteur means magician or illusionist and the inside decoration depicted that really well. The owner of the place was a former magician named Christophe Rossi from France. There were books and brown leather couch that hang on the ceiling, brick wall and shelves as well as the hidden restroom. It was fun to see some guests trying to figure out the way to open the 'hidden' restroom.
When we arrived, there were still two empty stools at the bar (yay). The newest staff member, Tom, introduced himself and gave us a cool menu filled with creative cocktails to choose from.
We decided to let one of the staff members helped us on what to choose. Joe asked us some standard questions of what kind of flavour that we liked and he went on to create two delicious cocktails for us. We ended up trying 6 different cocktails that night and I had to help Hubby finish his drinks ;-).
L'Escamoteur is definitely a quirky and friendly bar if you're looking for a place to drink. However it's important to come earlier than usual since they will turn customers away if the venue filled to its capacity. We were lucky that no one smoked when we were there especially since the bar has an open-smoking policy. It's also a cash only venue, so don't forget to prepare your Yen in advance. The cost of one drink is about 1,000-1,500 yen.

L'Esca Moteur is very "mysterious" bar. It is small, cosy and friendly place where you can meet travelers from everywhere but there are locals too. If you are looking for loud bar with tones of cheap beer - better DON'T go. But if you want to calibrate your taste with one of the best cocktails in world than you should GO!!! The quality is far beyond than a regular bar and even the bars in the 5 star hotels. The owner is French magician and in each of his cocktails there is something special. He and his colleges prepare them with passion so you can feel it and taste it with each sip. The magic is everywhere ... and when comes time for toilet, don't ask where is it, just try to find it ...

Bar stuff were so cool I couldn't believe it!! They were too cool to even be nice to me a paying customer? Thank you so much for letting me in though seeing as I only were a uniqlo t shirt not the highest fashion wears... On a side note your sazarac was not that good and yes it can have a different base to cognac thanks for trying to make me feel small with inferior knowledge. Anyway I will not come back ciao 😊

Visited this interesting bar with a few mates while on holiday, the bar itself was super cool, steam punk theme going on. However the cocktails are really overpriced for what you get, we paid 1,500 yen per drink which had a couple of mouth fulls if you were lucky. I believe you pay so much to watch the bartender as he prepares the cocktail for 10 minutes.
I'd recommend this place to see the bar, the cocktails were nice but way too over priced.

Go here for overpriced beer (¥1,200) that you order blind because they have no beer menu, lots of smoke, and a rude bartender/owner. There are a hundred other places in Kyoto worth your time and money.

Good cocktails, but unpleasant stay. Waiters are rude. It's really pity that the poor service and bad atmosphere destroyed our evening.

We visited L'Escomoteur Bar weekdays after dinner around the corner on our wonderful trip to Kyoto after looking for good cocktails. We really loved the interieur - immediately we felt like in a fairy tale or another magic place. The staff was really friendly, especially the french bar tender, who spread international charme. He mixed the cocktails in front of us, with lots of passion and love of details! He suggested unusual reinterpreteted cocktails and: We loved them!!! Every single cocktail (we had both 3 / 4) was a perfect taste experience! L'Escomoteur: Keep at it! You are wonderful!

I can only say great things about this place. The drinks were creative and delicious. The bartenders are experts at preparation - order one that comes with a show :)
The atmosphere was fun and the staff was super friendly. (Take their drink recommendations 👌🏼)
Will definitely return!

This is like a bar run by steampunk gypsies. The staff was from all over the world and very friendly. The décor was amazing, like cirque du soleil running a bar. And the cocktails were really great. Kind of expensive, 1500-2000 yen for a drink, but fine ingredients and sometimes even a show, as when they are smoking an old fashioned or lighting your drink on fire. Very small, so get there early or wait a bit and see who leaves. We enjoyed it so much the first time that we came back another time. Also, they played the best music of any bar we visited: modern mix stuff that wasn’t too loud and had a classic feel to it.
