The area
Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Had the best shiatsu massage ever at Asahido. After days of traveling and tired achy feet, decided it was time to spring for a massage. My masseuse was warm and friendly, spoke very good English. She got all the knots out and felt immediately rejuvenated. Highly recommend!

I was on a family vacation and hurt my neck somehow...my wife recommended I get a massage, so we found this place. It is such a traditional Japanese massage place that I didn’t think they would speak English. They speak great English and I had an appointment within 30 minutes. The massage was great and it is very reasonably priced. They were very nice and it was helpful for my neck. If you are even considering a massage at all go here!

We really enjoyed the massage. It was in a nice and calm place with a friendly reception. The massage was deeply calming and was a very nice round off after a busy day in Kyoto. One of the better massage experiences we have had.

Found this clinic during a recent trip (March 2019) to Kyoto. Made same day appointments and were very happy. Very comfortable clinic, friendly staff, and both of us got wonderful massages. The pressure was perfect, therapist checked in repeatedly to make sure massage was going well. Very pleased. Highly recommended.

The therapist Yuko-Shirabe gave me one of the best massages I’ve ever had. I had a sore back from traveling and immediately felt no pain the day after the massage. It lasted for days. I’m a runner and constant workout. This helped me get back to normal. Thank you!

So, after walking around a lot in Kyoto, I was looking for a professional Shiatsu massage, since I have never tried a Shiatsu massage before. I saw the reviews of Asahido Therapy Clinic and went ahead to their clinic. It is a traditional Japanese house, was easy to locate with google maps.
I was treated with the renowned Japanese hospitality. I was introduced to the masseur Mr. Osamu Kawakami san. My experience there on, was truly blissful and de-stressing! When I mentioned that I had a severe leg strain, due to lots of walking, Osamu san notied it and started concentrating on my legs. The massage technique was totally different from the other oriental massages. Shiatsu was not a pressure point therapy, but more of a soft touch but still very relieving technique. Osamu san also chatted up during the massage and mentioned his admiration for Ramana maharishi, whose middle name I happen to have. So, we ended up talking a lot about philosophy as he massaged me to completion, post which I felt blissful! My legs felt so fresh and relaxed too! This place is worth a visit for a nice, relaxing massage. Plus, they offer treatments for physical ailments too, if I am right. Overall, I was very satisfied with my massage!

I just had the most incredible shiatsu massage here. Osamu-san gave me one of the best massages that I’ve ever had. After a day of walking about town (temples, Nishiki Market), I was able to walk in and get a massage right away. I walked away feeling like a new person! Highly recommend to anyone in the area, I will be returning if time permits.

The massage I had here was below average. Not enough pressure was exerted even after telling the masseuse to increase the pressure. Also, I don't think the technique is being applied correctly as pressure was not applied long enough, i.e. the press and release was too fast. There must be better massage places around.

I went here several times in 2016 and 2017. The lady at the reception speaks English and was always very welcoming and friendly. Before the treatment I could indicate body parts I wanted the therapist to work on particularly. Nevertheless, the treatment always covered the whole body as well. I had different therapist - all of them had their own style and really helped me to relax and get rid of backpain, neck tensions and/or headaches. It seemed like they carefully adjust their treatment according to the needs of the client instead of following a standard procedure. I especially recommend Iyori-san. After shortly investigating my back, he immediately found knots and gave me the impression he knows everything about my body from head to toe. If you have never experienced Shiatsu, try it! You need to be aware that this is not a soft wellness massage, because the applied pressure can sometimes be firm. But, I never felt real pain during the treatment and - most important- it really helped to release tensions! In addition I find it very comfortable that you are wearing clothes during the therapy. The old machia style townhouse with its traditional Japanese interior and the relaxing music create a unique atmosphere. After the massage they always offered me a tea.

After climbing Mt. Fuji a few days ago my muscles were still very sore. I found Asahido on Trip Advisor and my hotel concierge confirmed that they were reputable. The front desk staff was very friendly and the massage therapist was clearly very highly trained. He was sensitive and accommodating to my medical condition. I highly recommend this professional studio.
