Neighborhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

We loved this drumming workshop. It was a lot of fun and our instructor was quick-witted with a fabulous sense of humour. It's amazing how much you're able to learn in an hour. I highly recommend this experience for anyone who loves drumming and is wanting to understand more of this magnificent culture.

We attended an introductory class and had a wonderful time. The instructor was very positive and enthusiastic. I have been to a few other drumming sessions in the past and struggled. I had no difficulty this time and by the end we were doing a complicated pattern with multiple drums. Highly recommended. This was a LOT of fun

If you are going to Kyoto you need to book a lesson on the Taiko drums it will certainly be a highlight of your time in this fabulous city, my family and i had a fantastic time. The staff are very friendly and the instructor who took us for our group lesson was very fluent in English.
The cost is ¥8000/person which may seem high but it was worth every Yen, as the saying goes you get out of it what you put in to it.

I surprised my wife on her birthday with a Taiko drumming class and she (we) loved it. I was looking for something unique to do on her birthday and found out about the Taiko Center. Since my wife loves music that involves drums and we have seen Taiko shows before, I figured the opportunity to learn Taiko as a beginner was a chance we couldn't miss.
The instructor (Isamu) was very friendly and passionate about Taiko. We were lucky to have a small class, which was more intimate and probably easier for novices to learn.
It didn't take the group long to get excited, as Isamu started us with some warm up beats on the drum. Something about a group of people banging on drums gets the heart pumping and your foot tapping.
Isamu led the group through some increasingly involved rythyms and by the end of the class we were playing as one team....and loving every minute of it.
We wish we could have taken more classes while we were in Kyoto, but this has peaked our interest to see if something similar is available where we live.
If you want to do something different during your stay in Kyoto and have a blast, this is the class for you.

We stumbled across the Taiko drum center while researching things to do in Kyoto. I am a professional drummer and thought it would be cool to take a lesson while in Japan. Originally I tried to set up a private lesson, but due to scheduling, we could only make a beginning group class. My son and I enjoyed it thoughouly and my wife took photos and video. It was fun, informative and we got some good exercise as well. I would recommend doing this activity if you are looking for something a little different to do while in Japan. Only 10 minutes by cab from Kyoto Station.

Expect to be active and work up a sweat. Our teacher knew how to bring fun in to banging the Taiko drum. After chosing our drum, away we went with an encouraging Kaiho as the master. He explained about history and the making of the Taiko.
Different rythms and crescendos, great fun and lots of smiles. In all an experiece well worth giving it a go.

A great experience for the whole family (47, 44, 13 and 10). Instruction is slow and builds gradually. Some fun games thrown in too. Finishes with you putting on your own performance, which they let you video; they even provide colourful jackets for you to wear!
But what was most impressive for me was not the drumming, but the way they seamlessly transferred our booking from Osaka to Kyoto after we had messed up our dates!
So if you have an hour or so to spare then you could do far worse than give this a go.

Very easy to do, in a nice small group. The instructor was friendly and enthusiastic. I would say suitable for children aged six and older. Our eight year old thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dear Momaround,
Thank you for taking our class.
Regarding the person in your group who had surgery, we are fine if he/she will join the class for free sitting and watching you playing.
However, if you had reserved the activity via travel agency, let them know, that he will not be playing, as they may charge you cancelation fee.
As per your father who is 77, there is no problem to join the class. We had customer in his 90, he played well and enjoyed a lot.
Regarding taiko performance, our instructors will be more than happy, to perform for you short performance. Just ask them if you are interested.
However, full performance costs \50,000JPY and must be performed at lease by 2-3 players. If you are interested in such private performance please let us know in advanced.
Thank you!

Hello, I am wondering whether the lesson is free. If not, what are the prices?
Sachimo3333

Hello! Thank you for your question. We keep on putting the price on the information here, but it never gets posted/updated by Tripadvisor! So the price to participate in our group class is 5000yen per person. Private class's price depends on the hour/request/number of people. There is more information on our website. I hope this helps!

I am going to Kyoto from May 31 until June 5th and I was wondering if I would be able to sit in on a class session or maybe participate in one. I am doing a 3 week study abroad program and the topic I will be studying is Taiko Drumming.

I am bringing my family to Kyoto in May and the children are aged 9 and 7 - are they too young for Taiko drumming and what would be the cost for 4 of us for the hours lesson please? Tanya
Sachimo3333
Kyoto, Japan2 contributions
Dear Tanya,
Thank you very much for posting questions! (And thank YOU very much Baraness for giving out a very helpful advice!!!)
What Braness said is very accurate. Our group lesson is 5000yen per person for an hour. If you would prefer a tailor-made private lesson, it would cost a little bit more but the price all depends on the specific requests.
Group lesson means you could be in a class with other tourists who signed up for the same time slot. If there is no one else, it could be just you but we will not know that until right before.
In terms of the level of our lessons, there is nothing for you to worry about. Our instructor will determine the level of each participant while doing simple exercises and rhythm games in the beginning, and proceed with lesson content that suits the group's skill. We have had a participant as young as 3, so your children will have no problem! (Actually, they might even do better than you as we have seen it happen with many families before!! ^^)
Please visit our website and submit the online reservation form if you are interested in doing our class!
