This is the holy grail of all travellers - an experience that is not put on solely for the tourists. In a smallish Taiko studio in an area of Tokyo which has no tourist attractions you can have an hour and a half lesson in Taiko drumming. at a very reasonable price. This is just for fun. Obviously you won't become a great drummer in one lesson. Our instructor had hardly any English, but he had no trouble showing us what to do. We had to share the studio with a group of Japanese who were serious students, but they didn't seem to mind. Indeed at the end of the time we had to show what we had learned and they all applauded us. (The Japanese are very polite) If you want to learn about the history of Taiko drumming you can take a tour with an English speaking guide, but we really enjoyed this as something different.

We loved this drumming workshop. It was a lot of fun and our instructor was quick-witted with a fabulous sense of humour. It's amazing how much you're able to learn in an hour. I highly recommend this experience for anyone who loves drumming and is wanting to understand more of this magnificent culture.

This, hands down, was my favorite experience on our trip to Tokyo/Kyoto. I had emailed ahead of time to try to book a class. All of them were full, so I asked if I could be added to one or just go in and watch a class. The folks at the Kyoto studio were kind enough to open up a new class for me and my husband. Taiko drumming turns out to be a mix of all the things I love. It is musical and physical. The instructor, Kaede Bande, was amazing. She is a talented drummer and teacher: funny, energetic and patient. If you take one of these classes be prepared to laugh and sweat! What could be better? If you have a chance to take this class, do it!!! Loved it!

I’m an experienced musician and booked this session solo as a fun diversion and to experience group taiko playing first hand. Our instructor Makoto was excellent - really good energy and positive vibe, and a good teacher. The activity was well pitched to suit all experience levels, and was a lot of fun. Many thanks for a fab experience!

We had a great fun session with Kaede Banda, teaching us an introductory rhythm which we performed individually and as a group. Hot work but very satisfying!
