About
Your opportunity to be part of Kyoto! "Ami Kyoto" provides traditional Japanese cultural experience in English for foreign visitors. You can experience Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement, Calligraphy and Tea ceremony in our 80-year-old traditional Kyoto townhouse. The foundation of Japanese traditional culture was laid in the Muromachi period. At that time, people called "ami" protected and promoted the emerging culture, including noh dance and the tea ceremony. They were priests who served a shogun or feudal lord, and sowed the seeds of our classical aesthetic values. Ami emphasized equality, virtue, harmony and calmness in their contribution to cultural development. "Ami Kyoto" continues to spread their spirituality which still underlies the Japanese culture of today.

Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

We LOVED our class with Chikaku at Ami Kyoto's studio. Our instructor was very knowledgeable and encouraging. We learned about the history of calligraphy, how to make our own ink, the meaning of the brushstrokes, and practiced our brushstrokes. It was a two hour class that just flew by, it was so much fun. I would highly recommend this experience.

If you really are interested in understanding the source of the flavours of or get some insights into the thinking behind Japanese home cooking , the Washoku course is really a must. I attended this course during my visit in July 2014 and enjoyed it very much.

The course is very well prepared and starts with a general introduction of the different categories of Japanese food. Then we proceeded to practice and made four dishes: rolled egg omelette, Miso soup, yakitori and, of course, rice (I have added some pictures). The food tasted very good.
The course leader (Kimiko) speaks very good English and is a good teacher who makes the course a very comfortable and enjoyable experience. I also received paper printouts with the recipes as well as the ingredients we used. One was in both English and Japanese and I used it at the local grocery store to ask for help in finding the sauces, spices and other stuff to buy and bring back home.

I also took the Ikebana course at the Kafu center and enjoyed it enormously. The course is also very well arranged. It starts with a general introduction as regards the history and basic principles of Ikebana. The teacher gave me some advice during my work and helped me follow the principles. I was very surprised and amused by the final result.

Trying both Washoku and Ikebana gives you the opportunity to experience by yourself the creation of a parcel (and morsel) of that unique Japanese beauty that we otherwise just admire everywhere in Japan. Don’t miss it!

We had a great experience with Mari and Kimi learning traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Ami Kyoto is a beautiful tea house. Mari and Kimi are both extremely knowledgeable about tea ceremony and we really enjoyed learning more and practising the ceremony and tea making ourselves. Topped off with delicious matcha tea and cake! Would highly recommend.

I was intrigued by Ikebana so I took a class with Kimi. She accommodated me at the last minute. She was such a pleasure to spend time with and the class was very informative. After all the running around I have done on this holiday it was nice to slow down. She was so warm and welcoming as well as helpful. The tea and sweets were a nice touch. Would highly recommend this wonderful cultural activity.

I spent a nice visit here with my friend to learn tea ceremony. The hosts are very kind and gentle. They explain the tea tradition in an relax and easy way. They also teach us some important gesture when you attend a tea ceremony. I learnt the meaning of the setting, the flowers, the drawing on the wall as well. At last we all made our own tea. They even served us the best cake before we enjoyed the tea! It was a very good experience and we bought the tea and cake back to Hong Kong to share with family. Thank you so much Ami!
