Neighborhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Cooking Sun was very accommodating when we wanted to make a last minute switch from the market tour class to the bento box class, and we had a fantastic time. The bento box class is great as you get a chance to try a number of Japanese cooking techniques (tempura, rolled omelet, etc.). The variety of items within one class seemed fairly unique vs. other cooking schools. Our instructors (Maya and Keiko) were really friendly and more than happy to answer questions about the cooking as well as Japanese culture.

Brilliant class. I was a bit concerned as a rice bowl seemed too simple, but I definitely wanted a market tour. I have done a few market tours in south east asia and its a great way to learn not only what that odd thing over there is, but how it is used. And in this case, what it tastes like. We were taken through the busy market with enough time to look, ask questions and taste many of the products on sale. Stuff I wouldnt have tried if I were on my own.
Our guide purchased ingredients for our chosen meals and then we returned to the studio for tea and the class. We had chosen the chicken and egg rice bowl and the seafood rice bowl. I am still talking about how something so simple as the chicken and egg ricebowl was so delicious.
I would definitely recommend to everyone

3 of us found the address fast and with not big problems. Just search for the market address before. U will find the place.
Well, it wasn’t the best cooking class at all. We did lot other classes before, so we have some experience.
We booked a cooking class including walk on the fresh market. Well, we could walk alone as well. No a big difference with or without facilitation from the class leader.
When we returned, well it was so hectic. No ones explained exact how, why etc we are going to cook. It was 5 of us in the class and all
of us was lost. Then someone cook and the others not even knows what the others are cooking and how. Then everything was finished cooked. How we should to shear the food. It was no plan. Then we got the info “we are not on the time schedule”. So what? It wasn’t our problem. Well, we was not happy. 3 of us and like the the 2 other persons from Australia, unfortunately we was not happy. Well, at the end we are on vacation.
This cooking school is not really to recommend. Sorry for that!

I am not a cook and as I’m just retired I thought maybe I’d better learn something new. The teacher has lovely English and is very patient.
She taught us so much in the 3 hours we were there and I was able to eat everything for lunch - I was very full.
The recipes are so good and the results are delicious. The teacher is very informative. I am now able to understand some of the basics about Japanese cooking. For example I didn’t know light soy sauce doesn’t colour the egg roll and is more salty than dark soy sauce!
I highly recommend this as a great way to spend a few hours. The kitchen is well equipped and a lovely atmosphere, with no washing up!

I took the morning bento class at Cooking Sun and it completely exceeded my already high expectations. The venue was beautiful and well set up, and the class size was intimate, ensuring that everyone really did get to do their own cooking! Our instructor, Coco, was warm and inviting, and she spoke English fluently. She had a great sense of humour and really engaged everyone in the demonstrations. The pace of the class was just right and there was enough time to eat our bento boxes for lunch at the end. The recipes were easy to follow and the results were delicious! The ingredient lists were short enough to not be intimidating, and I anticipate that I will be able to find most, if not all of the ingredients when I return home. I would not hesitate to recommend this class to anyone visiting Kyoto.

We had a great experience at Cooking Sun! It was the perfect combination of hands-on learning and watching expert cooks create excellent Japenese dishes; plus, the staff was very friendly and willing to answer questions and talk with us about all things Japanese!
And, obviously, the food was fantastic!!!! I visited Cooking Sun on my first day overseas, and I couldnt have found a better way to start my holiday!!
Thanks for a great time, Cooking Sun!

I did the afternoon class and loved it. The delicious dishes we prepared are remarkably simple to put together, and you get a hardcopy of the recipes to take with you. Note that you make a substantial amount of food and eat it in three rounds. I would encourage you not to eat a big lunch before coming here, because you will be too full to eat everything that you make!

We had a fantastic 3 and 3/4 hours cookery experience. There were 6 of us and we had plenty of individual attention. The recipes were fully adapted for our vegetarian needs and I learnt some new techniques that I feel confident about using at home. This was a hi-light of our trip to Japan and I can't recommend it more. It seemed expensive when I booked from the UK, but once we were in Japan I realised the cost was not excessive and we ate a really good meal as well as learning. Thank you

A quick tour of the amazing Nishiki market, we were given lots of history and food facts. The shops we stopped at were chosen to give a full experience (like seeing the fermentation of vegetables instead of plastic wrapped ones). We sampled so many iconic Kyoto foods. Yes, I did eat the octopus stuffed with egg.
Our guides are amazingly attentive: noting how much I love mushrooms, they bought some seasonal autumn mushrooms for our tempura. Same again for figs for dessert. They were really good with our kids too.
Back at the kitchen we started making the dashi - the basis for our meals. Our family of 5 chose at least one of the three recipes on offer. Three having tendon, the 9yo choosing kaisendon, and myself having oyakodon. Each was simple and delicious. We were guided through the steps and felt comfortable at all times. At the end we each tasted the others.
My family each said this was their favourite experience in Japan so far!
