It is the headquarters of Shingon sect. Chishaku-in is a big temple in Higashiyama area, but strangely there are not many foreign tourists. To enter the premises is free. But if you go there, I recommend you to visit its beautiful garden and see the paintings of Hasegawa Tohaku. One of his paintings is a national treasure. It is absolutely worth paying the entrance.

Why would you go: gorgeous garden, peaceful site

What you need to know: the entrance is not well signed. It's off the main road and you have to walk in a little way before there is even a Japanese sign. So, you exit the train station (Shichijo) and walk down past the Hyatt on your right and the Museum on your left and at the end of that road (about 10 minutes), cross over and turn right. The entrance will be on your left and it looks like you are headed into a business or school complex. Veer a little left and you will approach the ticket booth from the side.

I went early (9am) and it was raining so there was only 2 or 3 other people there. The first room with the garden is the more tranquil place I've seen. Stop and sit there for a moment. But know that when you walk around the outside (covered walkway), there is a lot more to see in the temple including a small rock garden and beautiful panel paintings.

What a fantastic zen temple. So peaceful and quiet and no crowds at all, but don't let that put you off. Easily one of the most beautiful grounds / temple I've been in. The gardens were fantastic and the screen paintings inside were wonderful too. One of the only temples you were allowed to take photos inside too. Loved it.

Kept coming back to the painted screen panels in the Kodo Hall and facing garden as for choosing which one or two temples we had in the short six hours touring Kyoto. Beautiful golden painted blossoms meditation room and facing garden

The monks have a 6AM chanting ceremony, followed by a fire and drum ceremony. These monks were very welcoming in a dramatic setting. The drum was great, the fire was clearly a metaphorical burning bush, and the grounds were beautiful.

Chishaku-In is a quiet, peaceful, and beautiful temple in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. There weren't any crowds to worry about, I only saw 2 couples during my stroll. The buildings and grounds are well kept. The interiors of the buildings have marvelous screen art, the garden is spectacular. The main hall overlooking the garden is a place to find peace. Beautiful photo opportunities here!

It is not famous - honestly I don't know why but in fact it's good because you don't have to worry about the crowds. Big temple, beautiful garden, variety of flowers during all seasons. It's relaxing, quiet and definitely worth seeing.

One of many excellent temples and shrines that are open to the public. Many historically point and one that symbolizes what attracts Westerners to Japan.

This was an accidental find. I was walking past to one of the more famous temples and decided to stop in. The main temple is free but to access the garden and old paintings in the museum you'll need to pay ¥500. Its worth it though as the calm garden is lovely and the 500 year old paintings are well preserved.

There's also a small restaurant near the entrance which specialises in traditional hand-made tofu. You can get a set for around ¥1500 and the food is very tasty.
