The area
Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

We enjoyed three hours as a family with Kaori who was a very welcoming host. We learned a great deal about Japanese cuisine and had great fun creating a delicious meal for ourselves including a Sushi roll, individual Sushi (Kyoto style!), soup and a green bean salad. Kaori, who is an excellent teacher, speaks English very well and explained everything to us in detail including the correct way to hold chopsticks ... which seemingly I’d been doing incorrectly for years! Come hungry as the meal you prepare is very substantial!!

This is highly recommendable! My family and I got a wonderful and insightful introduction to Japanese culture and cuisine at Roujiya. If we had taken this class when we arrived in Japan our table manner had been much better :-). We were met with a warm and welcoming heart. We quickly recognized our host had a deep passion for the Japanese traditionel cuisine, an excellent english and a broad knowledge of food in genereal. We where introduced to flavors such as umami and how to set a proper table. We learned to make sushi, a proper miso-soup and how to prepare the vegetables. Our host was well-prepared - she had a broad knowledge about the ingrediens, the deep-rooted food traditions and the food tasting. All in all, we were very impressed and very happy with our visit.

If you're heading to Kyoto and love food and cooking, then this class is for you!

It was just myself and my partner who got a lovely one on two class with the owner of the Inn; Kaori.

We choose the teriyaki class, but you could also do sushi making.

It was a very hands on class with great guidance, and best of all you get to learn something about Japanese culture and cuisine! Most importantly Kaori was a great teacher and the end result was delicious!

We had a wonderful experience at this cooking class, where we made okonoyimaki (Japanese style crepes/filled pancakes), rice balls, miso soup and pickled cucumbers. Kaori, the teacher, was warm and inviting, and taught us patiently how to make each of these dishes, while also filling us in on various aspects of Japanese culture. We loved spending around 2 hours with her in her home, learning not only how to make delicious foods (all of which we had an opportunity to eat - it is a huge lunch!) but also gathering insights into Japanese life. This class was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan and we highly recommend it for anyone who likes to cook or just wants to have a great Japanese experience.

Kaori was a wonderful, gracious, and very sweet host and teacher. We were lucky that we were the only two people signed up for class that day, but even if there were more people, it would have been a very intimate setting - ideal for really learning how to cook her delicious dishes. What drew me to the class was the history and culture of Japanese cuisine, customs, and the amount of dishes we would learn. I didn't feel rushed and was able to ask many questions, take notes and photos. Kaori is also a very interesting person and it was very fun talking to her about her travels. I highly recommend taking her class.

The cooking course is given by the owner of the guesthouse. She shares very well the way Japanese people cook traditional dishes at home, but also the stories behind Japanese food culture. This makes the experience really unique!
10/10 will recommend!!
... And we'll try to do the chicken teriyaki again once we'll be back in France ;)
