The area
Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Great to try on the clothes, use the swords and take pictures. Fun time though a little hard to understand her English.

In 1 hour and a half, we got to dress up in authentic samurai clothes (we didn't do it our ourselves because it's way too hard!) and practice basic moves with a katana. It was a unique experience. However, the sensei was a little bit too fast at times, so it was hard for me to keep up with the pace. At the end of the lesson, we got certificates and got to keep the socks and necktie as souvenirs.

From selecting outfits to learning the moves, this workshop was so much fun. Lots of patience was shown as my husband is uncoordinated!
My husband and son in law had the best time.
Highly recommend.

Dressing up as Samurai and learning some moves while holding a real (blunt) sword - already great fun! In the end, you even perform your own sword dance on stage accompanied by music. Also, the instructor explained the steps well & was really nice & helpful.
Take the 1,5 hours course which allows you to transform the results of your 1h training into the dance performance (my personal highlight ;D )

Excellent lesson (60mins), which teaches you how to handle the katana and the history behind samurai performance art. The instructors are patient, friendly and are fun with the lesson too! Great English to talk us through it all too.
The 30 minute show at the end of the lesson really brings home how much skill this art takes - very informative and entertaining. A must do - worth the money for sure! One of the best experiences I've had in Japan!

After the performance- which was quite entertaining as well as informative re: Samurai tradition and culture - we were taught how to use a real Samurai sword - even a kid of about 8 years. Very fun!

We are visiting as a family with 15 yrs old and 4 yrs old.
Is the experience include cutting with sword or just practicing? The 4 yrs old can watch for free?

They do not use real swords. They only show you how to do some of the different moves. They are very friendly and helpful. There's plenty of space to sit and watch if you don't want to take part. Enjoy!

For children (8, 6, 3) would you recommend just the show or the light lesson?

I think the 8-year old kid would enjoy the show and sword lesson. I am not sure for the 6- or 3-year old kids. It is nice to have pictures with the performers at the end of the show - just a memory for the trip. The room is dark and cool during the show. If you worry being cold, just bring an extra layer. If they were my kids, I would take them to see the show (just my personal thought).

You have to book online a day or two before arrival as it is limited seating and most of the time it is full.
It's an amazing experience, i totally recommend it.

Hello,
For schedules and reservations you can go to their website (samurai-kembu). There are usually two sessions per day except Sunday (it is closed).
For the start time and duration, it depends on what you want to do :
For the show only, the duration is around 1 hour (one session at 13h and an another at 17h or 18h - function of the day).
For the lessons only, there is two possibilities (light and full) :
- The duration of the light lesson is around 1 hour
- The duration of the full lesson is around 1 hour and half
- There is 3 or 4 sessions per day: one session at 11h, an another at 14h and an another at 18h or 19h - function of the day). This starts right after the show.
To finish you can buy package (Show + lesson): We did this (show + light lesson with costume for photos) and it was really really nice.
Regards
Francois
