Very beautiful. After taking your photos you are led through the gardens and up a steep hill. This is the only way out - so prep yourself for a little hike. Also you'll notice that Japanese people often keep a cloth hanky or small wash cloth with them at all times to wipe the sweat off their faces. I did... More

Amazing place.. It's a golden house in the middle of a lake. We went in and out, took pics, and went on to the next tourist spot.

I've been here multiple times, but recently went just as the site opened in the morning. The end of July is a fairly low season for tourism in Kyoto, but arriving here as the gates open is the only time I would recommend visiting. The bus loads of tourists start arriving at around 9.30-10am, but this tranquil time is ideal... More

This is a lovely temple complex in Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan. This temple complex is most famous for the Golden Pavilion, the shining gold building resting on a peaceful lake. The views are great but the complex is very popular and can get quite busy, especially with group tours.

The temple is nice and the garden is beautiful but there were so many people. Basically, I just went in, took some photos then left. There's nothing much that you can do.

Kinkaku-ji is one of the four main Kyoto attractions. Best time for good pictures in a snowy day or during cherry blossom.

Whilst it was crowded in the viewing areas, and the middle of the day (not the greatest for photography) it was still awe inspiring. Wonderful walk around the garden. Would highly recommend early or late in the day.

We enjoyed the view and peace around this temple. World Heritage site also known as Golden Pavilion where the main pavilion is covered with Golden leaf and the reflection of the temple can be seen in the water.

Very nice temple surrounded by nice garden. Worth a visit if you are in Kyoto. Only to go on a good sunny day, not to visit on a rainy day.

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
