Postcard view from almost every position. The golden pavilion, the pond and the trees, they are all architecturally designed, fulfilled and coordinated. It is a must for visiting Kyoto or even Japan.

Very nice to see that the pavilion is presented in such a way that you can get photos without people in front. It can be a busy place to visit. But very nice gardens and pavillion

Get there early to beat the crowds and the school kids, get your pictures then go! The gardens are pretty but there's not much else to see, if you start your day at this temple you can then head into Kyoto and go see some wonderful temples and the castle.

This is really kyoto's gem, small but full of sensations. It's surely an attraction that can't be missed even if being in Kyoto for a short stay. Quite a trip even by express bus 101 to get there, but strongly recommended.

It's different because it's golden. Also located at a super sweet spot next to a pond. There is also a nice trail near the tempel. Worth visiting even though there will be lots and lots of people.

Can't be missed! The Golden pavilion and surrounding grounds are beautiful and must be seen - it is a crowded place but it's well organized chaos, so don't be discouraged. This is one of world's wonders, especially on a sunny day, when the temple is sparkles in its glory.

Absolutely beautiful gold Pavilion on the water. I've seen this place in pictures, but nothing compares to seeing it in person.

It is a nice smaller than midsize temple standing aside from the toursits walking track. It is very popular, so there are enourmous number of tourists walking around... Visibility is very limited, especially due to the fact that each tourist tries to find a spot to take a picture. Overall, without the crowd visibility is not the best. Despite the... More

Golden Pavilion is beautiful place. View of the pavilion over the lake is fabulous. Only one thing can make your visit not satisfactory - there are hundreds of people standing behind you and trying to catch the best photo as you do. And mostly - those people are japanese students who try to talk to you afterwards. Inside the areal... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
