Neighborhood: Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.

The Kizakura Memorial Museum is located in Kappa Country. It was split on both sides of the road. On the north side, there was a kappa museum that displayed materials about kappa, the face of yellow cherry blossoms. It was unfortunate that no photography was allowed in the museum. On the south side, there was an exhibition about the yellow cherry blossom product lineup, old sake brewing, and "Fusui". There was no staff on either the north or south side, so I was a little confused to get in because it was a style of entering and visiting without permission.

Kizakura is a famous Sake in Fushimi, and Kappa Country is a facility, which is managed by their brewery. There is a small museum (free) and a restaurant, where you can try their original beers.

The museum here (on the other side of the road from their gift shop) is free, but basic compared to Gekkeikan, especially if you don't speak Japanese. Go there for the information and here for your shopping (unless you are a sake connoisseur). You can have a drink of the water they use for making Sake here though straight from the tap. Bring a water bottle, that's what the locals do! It's meant to be really fresh and tasty. It's not the only place in the Fushimi sake district either, there are a few of these random taps where you might see people filling up all around the area.
Anyway, back to Kappa Country. The quality of the food at the restaurant is not top-notch, but reasonable (think a Japanese version of a family bistro) and cheap. A 3-cup sake tasting set costs Y600, but you get a lot of sake. If that's pricey, you can get some super cheap sake from their shop, where prices start from less than Y100 for 100mL jars. They also have a small gallery opposite their shop where there's some interesting "Kappa" art (kappa are a river troll, common in Japanese folk legends and also mascot of Kizakura) and re-runs of old Kizakura commercials, some of which are sexist or nonsensical, but all of which are hilarious.

This is the first and only time while traveling across Japan that we were treated like "Dirty Gaijin". My wife and I traveled 10 miles (in the rain) to have dinner at this restaurant. We were nicely dressed and polite when we walked up to this tall stone faced host/cashier who barely acknowledged us. When we asked if there was a table for two available, he coldly replied that they were closed. When we pointed out that it was only 21:02 and their website indicated that they were open until 22:00 the man again replied with nothing more than "We are closed" we then asked what time they closed he replied simply "9". We pointed out that we had come a long way and that it was raining outside, he gave us no apologies or compassion.
We left with a feeling of dirty oppression.

We did not even get as much as a hello here. We were just stared at by the clerk and felt unwelcome even looking around in the gift shop. There is an interesting display of Kappa drawings and sculptures. The place is not really worth five minutes of your time. Just keep walking.

They didn't answer our questions. We tried to order with a japanese menu, and ended in vain. They gave us plates of sashimi which we cannot digest and not good sake. The small place for kappa was cool. It was our first trip to Japan. We just felt ignored.

Reviewing the restaurant here and not the museum, which is all in Japanese and fairly basic. A second visit to Fushimi Sake District, a second trip to Kizakura for lunch. They've got a great cheap set-lunch menu and a few different sake and beer taster sets too. You can opt for the Japanese style seating area for no extra charge, just ask the waiter/waitress.
