About
Ume Sakura is a kimono rental salon located in Central Kyoto, Japan. We have been offering a wide selection of traditional kimonos to visitors and locals for over a decade. Established in 2009 in the Kitano/Nishijin garment district by an obijime desinger, we have specialized in high quality, authentic, and stylish everyday kimonos for women and men. In 2019, we have moved our salon to the Gosho-Minami area, near Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gosho) and the Teramachi shopping district. Our salon is in a historical Machiya (traditional wooden townhouse) with tatami rooms and a courtyard garden, where we offer a quality, personal, and special experience.

Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

A very traditional experience...
Dec 2019
With a recommendation from a good friend, I took my girlfriend to Ume Sakura to rent her a Kimono for her birthday. The location is not in the main tourist spots but they compensate with a first class experience and a vast selection of traditional or contemporary kimono. My girlfriend is very meticulous and the friendly lady was extremely patient and helpful throughout the process. I was truly amazed at the time and effort it takes to get into a kimono the traditional way. She also did my girlfriend’s hair. It was a wonderful experience!

Amazing, authentic kimono experience
Nov 2019
My husband and I had the pleasure of renting traditional kimonos from Ume Sakura in November 2019. We had originally booked with another location but saw that Ume Sakura seemed to have more traditional looking kimonos. We made reservations online. We arrived at the salon in the morning and were quickly greeted warmly by the owner, Yagi. The salon itself is in a traditional wooden townhouse and the garden is beautiful. They had tons of beautiful kimonos to choose from and you can tell that the fabric is of the highest quality. I had a hard time choosing so asked Yagi for a recommendation for a kimono that would look nice against the backdrop of the Autumn leaves.. I could not be happier with his choice (see the beautiful photos attached)! They did my hair, let me choose a purse and gave me some slippers and off I went to explore Kyoto and take amazing photos in my kimono! I received so many compliments on my kimono and did not see anyone else with a similar one! The experience was amazing and authentic from start to finish! If you want to wear a beautiful, traditional kimono, receive great Japanese hospitality and have a unique experience in Kyoto, renting from Ume Sakura is a must! Thank you Yagi and Eku for your warm smiles and hospitality! I will be returning in the future!
