About
Seanacey began practicing Sogetsu style ikebana in 2008 and received permission to teach in 2014. In addition to teaching workshops, she does custom floral styling for stores, events, and films. Kinse Ryokan, the site of our workshops, is a 250 year old building which has been a teahouse and ryokan, and is now a boutique guesthouse and coffee shop/bar.

Highlight for my wife and I during our Japan trip! Perfect for bonding and getting your creative flow going. This workshop with Seanacey was 10/10 and let me tell you why.
The experience began with a warm welcome, tea, and traditional Japanese sweets, setting a relaxing and inviting tone. Seanacey introduced us to the rich history and philosophy of ikebana, explaining how it blends meditation, creativity, and personal expression. This introduction gave us a deeper appreciation for the art form before we even got started.
The hands-on portion of the class was equally wonderful. We began by learning the classical style of ikebana. Seanacey guided us through the techniques with patience and care, allowing us to understand the balance and harmony central to the traditional style.
After practicing the basics, we were invited to create our own unique arrangement. This was such an exciting challenge! Seanacey provided a stunning selection of flowers and expertly offered guidance without stifling our creativity. It was both inspiring and empowering to see our personal expressions take shape.
The class concluded with photos of our creations in front of a gorgeous backdrop, perfectly lit to showcase our work. It was an unforgettable moment that perfectly captured the essence of the experience.
Seanacey’s passion, expertise, and hospitality made this class truly special. If you’re looking for a meaningful, artistic, and serene activity in Kyoto, I can’t recommend this ikebana class enough. Thank you, Seanacey, for such an enriching experience!

I was looking for a Ryokan to stay at in Kyoto and stumbled across Kinse Inn through curatedkyoto IG. Unfortunately they were all book for the weekend due to Golden Week but their website had a page on ikebana which was an activity I was also looking forward to do in Kyoto. Although there were plenty of ikebana workshops available elsewhere, I specifically chose this because Seanacey could speak English fluently and I knew I would have a lot of questions about Ikebana and traveling and living Kyoto in general. This workshop was very enjoyable and I learned about the history of Ikebana as well as the different schools of thought on the practice. Seanacey started off the workshop introducing the foundational elements with the traditional style and during the second half gave us creative freedom to experiment freestyle. I appreciate that we were also able to take the flowers home to continue practicing. If I had more time, I would definitely spend some time in their cafe for a cup of a coffee.

Myself and my partner arrived at 9am to be greeted by Seanacey our lovely relaxed, friendly host and teacher for the Ikebana workshop. From the moment we arrived Seanacey offered us a drink and explained the history of ikebana and place in which we were to do the workshop within. We felt so lucky to have experienced a piece of Japanese tradition with a modern twist- Seanacey encouraged us to experiment but also taught us the fundamentals before we began to freestyle which was super helpful.
Excellent course if you would like to experience ikebana in a traditional setting with a modern twist and an English speaking teacher.

We cannot recommend this Ikebana workshop highly enough! It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. First of all, the setting of the class is unreal: a historic inn with 100-year-old stained glass windows and period furniture. Seanancy, an American who has been studying ikebana for years, is a knowledgable teacher and makes ikebana accessible and fun. I enjoyed learning about the history and various schools of ikebana almost as much as trying it myself. Seanancy doesn't go on and on (don't get me wrong), but she helps everyone understands the many facets of the art. During the class, we made one formal arrangement, doing our best to follow the various requirements of the form. We finished with a freestyle, anything goes arrangement. Working within the confines of the form was fascinating. Of course, this class barely scratches the surface of ikebana, but it left us wanting to learn more.
Another class bonus is tasting the very small-batch coffee served in the inn. A neighbor has set up shop in the lobby and hand roasts coffee every day to sell locally. It smells and tastes amazing. We didn't stay in the inn, but we would be excited to try it next time. Seanancy and her husband Kejiro, whose grandmother ran the inn for years, are the proprietors, along with their adorable son, Noah.
If you are at all interested in ikebana or even just learning something new in a beautiful historic setting (with incredible coffee!), then this workshop is for you!
