We had a wonderful private tour with Bodhi the day after New Years to Ryoanji, Kinkaku ji, Imamiya Shrine, and Daitoku ji. Kyoto Guided Walks and Bodhi were great at being flexible and customizing the tour because I specifically wanted to see Ryoanji as early as possible. Given it was the holiday season, Bodhi made sure to check Ryoanji's hours which was very helpful as well. We also had a lovely vegetarian lunch.

We highly recommend Kyoto Guided Walks if you are looking for a thoughtful, small group guided tour.

Great tour - our guide Keith had decades of insight from living and working in Japan so we asked him all the questions that had built up on our holiday so far. Thoroughly recommend. Will definitely get in touch again when we next visit. Thanks all

My partner and I had an unforgettable 2 hours with Keith G, strolling and chatting in the Nishiki Market. Every stop was well curated by the wonderfully knowledgeable Keith and sprinkled with interesting and relevant nuggets about Kyoto history and customs. Keith read us well and was cool with us setting the pace of the journey; we ambled from shop to shop, tasting some wierd and wonderful things, picking up a few bits and pieces to take home and having enough photo opportunities to be able to tell the story in years to come. The only downside is I wish we had had a few more hours in such good company so that we could have benefitted even more from Keith’s vast local knowledge! Highly recommended!

We had such a wonderful tour with Keith to explore Nishiki Market and the Gion neighborhood. Nishiki Market was a blast as we worked our way through various shops trying new things. fyi - I was traveling with my husband and 2 sons (18 and 20 yo). We tried so many yummy things (freshest oysters, candied baby octupus, sake tasting, A5 Wagyu, strawberry mochi treats, to name a few). And then we walked over to the Gion neighborhood to a wonderful izakaya restaurant (which we would never have been able to find on our own). Again, the food was amazing and we got to try things that we wouldn't have thought to order on our own. We were also lucky enough to catch sight of 3 elusive geishas/ maikos. It was wonderful evening and I highly recommend. Keith really delivered a one-of-a-kind experience for us that we will always remember.

Chris was very prompt in answering questions prior to us booking with him which set the tone for our whole experience. We did the two hour Night Walk with him our first night in Kyoto - we chose this so we would know what to look for on our subsequent days in Kyoto and we Chis did just that!

Our kids (ages 17 and 19) had never been on a personal tour like this and they were very unsure what to expect and were not all that thrilled with the idea. Chris disarmed and charmed them within the first stop on the tour. He did a lot of talking but also a lot of listening - and when they showed interest in something, he fed into that. This made all the difference in the rest of our experience. He figured out that we were foodies and tailored our stops to that interest - so yes, we ate our way through the market (and patiently waited while I bought many of the things we tried!). We even showed him a picture of something we found in Tokyo that we liked and he knew exactly where to take us to find a better version.

Overall, he helped us see the “trees in the forest” - the small details that make an experience rich that you would overlook if you didn’t know they were significant. Details such as salt placed at doorway entrances, what a common statue was placed at doors of homes and businesses, the details within the Gion district, etc. Our two hours with Chris set us up for a great rest of our trip. Thank you!!!

Thank you Jessica for you very kind review!! It was a genuine pleasure to guide your family through the array of food options both in Daimaru Depachika and Nishiki Market and to witness your kids really embracing the unique experiences on offer too. Even though it was only a two hour tour, we were able to cover a lot in this time plus were very fortunate to catch a glimpse of a maiko going to her evening appointment as we explored Gion. Hope this was a great introduction to Kyoto both from a food and a cultural perspective!

Have just spent a fantastic afternoon on this tour with Michael. It was excellent. Michael was a perfect guide having lots of local knowledge and information to share with us as we explored.
Initially had issues getting on to it through trip advisor but found another site that helped. Would highly recommend this tour.

Our family of four (two adults, two teens) had a fabulous day with Chris of Kyoto Guided Walks! Chris was great to work with in planning the tour... he responded promptly to email and really listened to our wishes when designing our tour itinerary. He met us at our hotel and we learned so much about Kyoto while spending the day with him. He related very well to our kids and was respectful of our pace (both kids fighting colds and jet lag on our tour day). We visited out of the way places in Arashiyama where we could enjoy nature away from the crowds - our son even climbed a tree during our tour! Chris arranged a delicious lunch which was great for both vegetarians and omnivores. We ended our day with a nearly hidden foot bath which left us all relaxed and content. We learned, laughed and saw places that we would never have found on our own. Our experience in Kyoto was so much more in depth because of our tour! I would book Chris again in a heartbeat!

Many thanks for your kind review! It was a real pleasure showing your family some of the hidden charms of Arashiyama and I'm so happy to hear everyone enjoyed the personalised tour. The local lunch spot we went to is one of my favourites and the foot bath is definitely the best way to finish the day! Hope to see you all here in Kyoto again soon :)

My 20-year-old daughter and I did the Nishiki Market & Gion food tour with Keith and it was so much fun! Keith guided us through various interesting food samples at the Nishiki market, took us on a tour of a couple of geisha areas, where we had the good fortune of seeing geiko and maiko, and then to an izakaya for drinks and snacks. Keith has a wonderful personality and it was a fun and informative night out. My daughter and I both loved it.

Don't do a big bus tour when you can do this instead. It's so much more personal and way less touristy. Keith was outstanding -- he's a longtime Kyoto resident and really knows the ins and outs of the place. My husband and I spent 2 & 1/2 days with him (half day Nishiki Market and Gion tour, full-day Hidden Charms of Arashiyama tour, and full-day Kinkakuji, Ryoaji and Northern Kyoto tour). He gave us so much insight into the culture and history, and tailored the tour to our interests. He met us every morning at our hotel (Cross Kyoto), and then we took taxis to our destination area where we started walking. Kyoto is such a beautiful city, and it is very walkable. We ate our lunches at small local spots - the food was inexpensive, delicious, and authentic. Chris and Keith were also excellent in communicating with us via e-mail prior to our departure from the States. They were very helpful answering my questions about traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto. This is a well-run company, and I highly recommend them.
