Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

We had a great morning on this cycle tour. It started with a delicious coffee at Naoki’s shop around 7.30am then we headed off to see some beautiful temples and shrines. We stopped off at a very popular bakery and bought some treats for later (which were delicious). The cherry blossoms came early so we even spotted a few of them. The bikes were easy to ride and the basket at the front was very convenient for bags and jackets.
At first it was a bit cold so I am glad I had my gloves but the sun was out and it quickly warmed up. Most of the riding was flat and through backstreets which made it quite safe and relaxing. Although for us it was an early start, It was great to see the city quiet with very little traffic around. Naoki was lovely and had great English and was able to explain the sights to us.
Once we were back at the shop we enjoyed some craft beer and said our good byes. Arigato Naoki, it was great to meet you.

A highlight of Kyoto! Naoki San is a bike master and the tour is slow paced, winding through the backstreets of Kyoto. Contact him before and he will give some good places to visit that won’t be covered in the tour. Then, on the day, he will start the morning early, with a coffee. And it’s a GREAT coffee. The tour kicks off following the Kama River south then winding through the streets of Gion, North Higashiyama and across the city, finishing near the Imperial Palace. Naoki speaks perfect English, and is more than happy to answer questions along the way. We stopped at two temples then finished at the Imperial Palace, with a guided tour. It was a fantastic way to see the city and we are so happy we were recommended to visit Naoki. Thank you for a great day!!!

Stumbled across this very quaint and beautiful cafe while exploring the area around my hotel in Kyoto. The owner Naoki san (I hope I spelled your name correctly Sir!), is very friendly and inviting. He also happens to make a mean pour over brew 😃! Spent 2 mornings chatting over brew. So if you find yourself in Kyoto, do drop by and visit. He also runs bike tours and rents some really nice city bikes. Plotting my next visit already!

Fantastic experience doing a bike tour here. The owner Naoki is very friendly and gave us options for tours over coffee. We booked for the next day and he led a small group of us on bikes around the east side temples of Kyoto, going to the places that would be hard to find without a local guide. He also knew how to beat the crowds and where were the best photo spots. The tour finished at the shop where he provided us coffee drinks and recommendations for restaurants in the area. Thanks Naoki!!

I cannot recommend this enough. We absolutely loved our bike trip from start to finish. It was such a great way to see so many sights in just one afternoon (especially as we had our 4-year-old with us) - we wouldn’t have been able to see nearly as much on foot, public transport or car. Naoki was very accommodating and knowledgeable. We loved weaving through the amazing little streets we otherwise would never have discovered, in addition to covering the major attractions. And the pre-ride coffee and post-ride beers were wonderful too. We will definitely book another tour with Naoki when we next come to Kyoto.

Thank you for joining the tour with me and your great review! I had such a wonderful bike tour with you. And I was so happy to hear you enjoyed it. Most happiest thing was to see your 4 year old kid was enjoying and putting a bid Amaike on her face. I was also happy to show you some cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Thank you so much again!
I hope I will see you again and do the bike tour!
I wish all of you well!

This was our highlight experience of Kyoto! Not having ridden a bike for years and with young children we did the Riverside Ride in the afternoon which was ideal, we got to see areas of Kyoto that we would never have visited - away from the crowds. Our guide made the ride! Accommodating, in tailoring the ride for our girls and the beer and hot chocolates at the end were more than appreciated! Make room in your itinerary, you won't be disappointed.
