The train is anything but romantic however if you can grin & bear it and pay to get the boat back then I think it's worth a look. The boat takes about 1.5 hours and passes some gorgeous scenery- some of it doesn't look real- stunning! If you cycle to the Saga station too then you get a good view... More

Perhaps not romantic but a nice sightseeing trip along the Hozu River. The Sakura season was almost over when I rode but still it was fun and the sights were nice. I think the fall colors would have been nice to see on this train ride. Get there early if you intend to do things in Arashiyama before getting on... More

It was a short ride of about 20mins but extremely popular with the locals as well as tourists. Our tour company reserved assigned seat tickets for us in advance. The train was full even on a Monday morning when we went. To avoid disappointment, try to book tickets before you go. The reason that we did not enjoy this experience... More

The train was lovely but there wasn't many photo opportunities and you could only see the views from one side of the train. The boat ride was wonderful though and lots of fun. It was around 45 yen each for the boat alone but was definitely worth it.

Its NOT romantic... two complete strangers facing me and looking at me all through the sick 20 mins is NOT romantic There is NO view - I mean, the topography, if there arent any cherry blossoms, is pathetic. The instructions are in Japanese (not that they matter) And they allow people to stand.. like I paid 2500 yen for the... More

I wouldn't recommend doing the return trip if you know how to get back because it was a bit boring after the first ten mins. Everything during the 25 mins and back looks exactly the same.

Location: Sightseeing trains depart from Torokko Saga Station which is just next to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. Summary: Sagano Scenic Railway (嵯峨野観光鉄道) aka Sagano Romantic Train or Sagano Torokko is a sightseeing train. Their route runs along the Hozugawa River between Arashiyama and Kameoka. Enjoyed the breeze/wind as you sit in this charming, old fashioned trains as it travelled at a... More

First of all, if you decide to do this, you absolutely need to book tickets in advance. There is assigned seating, and once those run out, you either have to wait for another train or get a standing room only ticket. Because of this, the train is overcrowded and less pleasant than it would otherwise be. The train ride itself... More

I came here during my autumn trip. Very scenic train ride. the train operates every 1 hour. Need to pay 620yen for 1 way. I only take 1 way ride and then proceed to take JR train direct to Kyoto Station

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
