It is a famous five-storied pagoda commonly known as the Yasaka Pagoda and is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku. The existing pagoda was rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshinori in the Muromachi period (1440) and can be seen up to the second floor of the inner sanctuary at a height of 46 meters. Also, on the gatepost was written "Japan's first pagoda," and when I looked up from there, I marveled at the advanced technology of the time and also felt a tremendous history. However, since the temple is open from 10:00 to 15:00, it is a pity that we were not able to see it when we visited around 9:00.
By the way, there is Yasaka Koshindo (posted separately), which is known for its colorful Kuri-zaru monkeys.

Beside Yasaka Shrine, Yasakanoto or Yasaka Pagoda is certainly the symbol of this area. Or it is even a landmark of Kyoto. It is located on the way from Kiyomizudera to Yasaka Shrine, so many tourists pass by everyday.

Before the sun rises, when the sun is about to set
When it's buried in the sunset, before it rains
When it's cloudy
When the rain and wind blows
It's the perfect place to visit at such times.
Today too, the rain is falling little by little.
The atmosphere is more intense.

A 46 m tall, 5-Story Buddhist Temple in pagoda style - akaYasaka Pagoda.
Up the hill away from the Gion District, up quite narow streets of 'Tat Shops', thronged by tourists, which afforded few decent unimpeded views, to the extent that it became something iof an ordeal.
We gather, if you have the time and can be bothered with the que & climb to the top, there is a neat view

Allow yourself plenty of time to leisurely wander around this area. The temple is central but is certainly not the only site to appreciate while you are here. The architecture and design of the entire area is a historic time capsule of days past. Another great place to visit in beautiful Kyoto.

Yasaka Pagoda is a 46-meter tall pagoda with graceful, sloping roofs on each tier, which lies in the middle of an old Kyoto neighborhood, between Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasaka-jinja Shrine. It is one of the unexpected treasures that reward the person on a casual stroll through the Higashiyama District. It is very distinct while walking Sannenzaka Ninenzaka. A beautiful time to view it as at dusk.

Higashiyama is famous not just because of this iconic Yasakanoto pagoda that's plastered on most of Kyoto's magnets, but also for the ancient walking street, Nene-no-michi (Nene street), which we were here for. Think of olden Japan and images of elegant Geishas in kimonos walking around in wooden clogs come into mind. This is one of the ancient walking streets where the Geishas indeed used to roam, and the more famous Geisha town is just few hundred metres down the road at Gion.
It's a great idea to get your taxi to stop you at the Yasakanota pagoda (though taxis can only go as far as the bottom barricades of the pagoda), because from here on, it is a downhill walk down the ancient walking street called, Nene-no-michi (Nene street). Here's what you'll pass by:
- Meiji era shops and houses, mainly selling souvenirs, teas, etc.
- Hello Kitty Kyoto is one of the first shops you'll see
- 100 metres in, Ghibli Studios Shop (creators of Totoro!)
- 250 metres in, Kasagiya is a small, cute tea house for desserts
- 350 metres in, Omen Kodai-ji branch has good local food
- Kodai-ji temple and its gardens, Kodaiji Sho Museum, Entokuin temple are at the midway point of this walking street
- Ishibei-koji (stone-paved path) is a small and really quiet passage way that leads out to the main road, and many of these good-looking ancient houses along this path are still privately owned, and some high-end restaurants have set up shop here too.
Tip: Go in the mid afternoon, especially if you intend to have tea there. When it was 4+pm, most of the shops were closing and only very few shops were open by 430pm, and almost all shops were closed at 5pm! If you want to take photographs of an empty version of this ancient walking street, go at 5pm, capturing the beautiful sunset too.

We were staying in a hotel very close by and we walked around this temple at night it was breath taking. Very very beautiful. I sat and looked at the details of the carved wood for quite a long time. It somehow captured my attention in its simplicity I loved every details of it.

Incredibly beautiful pagoda and the remaining of Hokanji Temple. It is situated in a very nice and quiet area of the "old Kyoto" and is definitely worth a visit.
