Right next to Nanzen-ji San-mon gate the Tenju-an (a subtemple of Nanzen-ji) has a beautiful garden with white gravel field viewed from temple platform and also a stroll garden. The view from temple is characterized by a path of diagonally placed square stepping stones and moss. Japanese maples behind the field were about to enter the autumn colour season when I visited and had individual, slightly off-green hues making a beautiful background. The stroll garden is much like a wild forest – its route goes around a beautiful pond and you get also to walk over it using round stepping stones.

This is a lovely garden to stroll into especially during autumn colour, though I can imagine it being good for all seasons.

There is a sand garden with very attractive leaves around it that you can sit and marvel at. It also has an amazing koi pond that makes for an excellent picture.

It is a lovely stroll across a very peaceful garden though it is crowded during autumn colours. If you are going, either go very early or find pockets of time where it is less crowded and it is well worth your time to sit and enjoy the views.

One of the most beautiful garden’s I’ve ever seen. Tucked into Nanzen-ji in a way you might easily miss, the gardens are a hidden jewel. It’s well worth the admission price to wander through the gardens and two ponds. The quietness, serenity and beauty of the water and gardens takes you away from all else. These gardens are rarely busy. If you are touring Kyoto with its crowds you’ll find this a relaxing and calming visit.

The temple is not a major work of architecture, and the garden doesn't seem to score for sophistication of design, but the pond is as lush as they come, the front sand garden has a spectacular view of the great Nanzen-ji gate, and the side sand garden has blazing maples in fall, and a huge crape myrtle for summer. When I visited at the end of March, things were somewhat dull, but the garden was looking very well cared for, the temple veranda an inviting place to sit, and the place seemed far away from the crowds on the other side of the wall. I've included a ten year old fall photo to show the seasonal contrast.

I love places that are off the beaten path without the crazy tourists getting in your way every two seconds. This garden is small, but delightfully calm. We were alone, in fact, until more than halfway through when a few other people came along behind us. Thankfully they were rather quiet, so it didn't ruin the garden for us. I almost hate to recommend or review this place because more people will know about it! lol But it's worth the price of admission to get away from the crazy for an hour.

I have been to Japan many times, and this garden is my favorite in all of Japan. It's a sub-temple complex on the Nanzenji grounds, and it's way less crowded. I got there when it opened, and I was able to take my time across the beautiful stepping stones across the pond. I enjoyed sitting and watching the sunrise as well. Definitely worth it to visit!

I visited easily 20 gardens in Kyoto, and I would rate this the most beautiful. Ended up spending nearly 2.5 hours here.. The entrance fee is 400 Yen if I recall correctly and it is well worth it. It is a must visit place within Nanzenji complex. I visited it in cherry blossom season in Kyoto and although there were no cherry blossoms there that should not deter one from visiting as it is one of the most beautiful zen gardens and is very calm and tranquil. I saw several people just click a photo at the entrance and walk way (probably trying to avoid the fee or to save time) but I was very happy I chose to go in and spend time there. I believe Tenjuan looks extremely awesome in autumn and I can't wait to get there to see autumn leaves.

This garden is very small and not really worth the entry fee. Compared to the spectacular gardens at Himeji the previous day it was fairly lack lustre.
