I visited here on 11/24. While the autumn colors are generally slow, I think the garden here is the one with the autumn colors advancing. The autumn colors on the stone garden side are especially impressive. The pond at the back of the garden looks like it's still to come.

I visited on November 25th. It's been about 7-8 years since I last came here. This temple changes color relatively quickly. The rock garden has already passed its peak and is starting to fade. The pond is still in a gradation state, but the lotus has spread over the surface of the water, so the reflection is no longer visible.

As the title suggests, it has the most beautiful garden among the sub-temple buildings of Nanzenji Temple.
The main hall is generally off-limits to the public, but you can enter when it's lit up.
(By the way, it was extremely crowded before the COVID-19 pandemic.)
When it's open to the public, you can go all the way to the pond at the back, so it's well worth a visit.
Please note that there are no goshuin stamps available.

After the crowds this is the Temple to sit, breathe and enjoy. Beautiful experience and lovely caretakers.
Went just before closing after a good deal of time up the hill. We were invited to stay as long as we wanted. Birds abound.

This is a lovely garden to stroll into especially during autumn colour, though I can imagine it being good for all seasons.

There is a sand garden with very attractive leaves around it that you can sit and marvel at. It also has an amazing koi pond that makes for an excellent picture.

It is a lovely stroll across a very peaceful garden though it is crowded during autumn colours. If you are going, either go very early or find pockets of time where it is less crowded and it is well worth your time to sit and enjoy the views.

The Tenjuan Garden is absolutely gorgeous, with beautiful plants and a pond with tons of Japanese carps that are very eager to come near. If you are into photography, you may end up spending a few hours here.

This is one of those places that you can try to describe to others but will always fall short! I felt like I had stepped into a secret garden. I did not want to leave. It is so peaceful. I went in November, so it was not too busy. I don't know how peaceful it is during peak times. It was recommended to us by our private guide (A Kyoto Native). It is not as "popular" as other spots, and in way, I hope it stays that way. Not to be ruined or commercialized as so many spots are (not only in Japan)!
Anyways, a must see.

The temple is not a major work of architecture, and the garden doesn't seem to score for sophistication of design, but the pond is as lush as they come, the front sand garden has a spectacular view of the great Nanzen-ji gate, and the side sand garden has blazing maples in fall, and a huge crape myrtle for summer. When I visited at the end of March, things were somewhat dull, but the garden was looking very well cared for, the temple veranda an inviting place to sit, and the place seemed far away from the crowds on the other side of the wall. I've included a ten year old fall photo to show the seasonal contrast.

I love places that are off the beaten path without the crazy tourists getting in your way every two seconds. This garden is small, but delightfully calm. We were alone, in fact, until more than halfway through when a few other people came along behind us. Thankfully they were rather quiet, so it didn't ruin the garden for us. I almost hate to recommend or review this place because more people will know about it! lol But it's worth the price of admission to get away from the crazy for an hour.

This is a small subtemple of the Nanzen-ji complex, but in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful and memorable. Possibly because there are less tourists coming in (I guess you would think twice about paying the fee for this small temple when there's Nanzen-ji just there) the vibe here is serene and peaceful, helping you get in the right frame of mind to just take in the architecture, nature and setting. Incredibly gorgeous in autumn.
