The area

Address
Neighborhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

Daihonzan of the Rinzai sect. It is easy to visit together with Togetsu-kyo Bridge and bamboo forest. Tickets are detailed: 800 yen for the main hall + bamboo grove, 500 yen for the bamboo grove alone, and 500 yen to see the Unryu-zu. The Unryū-zu is painted on the ceiling in an octagonal stare, which is impressive to a certain extent, but it was only recently painted, so that seems to be a hmmmm. It's just a ticket to see it. Photographs of Unryu-zu are prohibited. Bamboo groves are gardens, not so-called Arashiyama bamboo groves. It's a one-way shortcut because you can't get in twice, although it's a shortcut to get to the bamboo forest. If you just want to see the bamboo groves, you can go around the outside of Tenryu-ji Temple, although it is a detour.

If you want to pipe only indoors, you only need to pay 300 yen. All plumbing fees are 800 yen. 6 types of Tenryuji flowers. Welcome When it's hot, it might be a good idea to pay 300 yen and have indoor plumbing only. It was 26° today and it was very hot. It was hectic with groups of tourists and students tangled together.

I left my house after 9:50 and came to Tenryuji Temple by bicycle around 11:10. The purpose is the 59th "Winter Journey in Kyoto" Special Exhibition of Cultural Properties not open to the public. The admission fee is 1,300 yen. Miraculously, we made it to the 11:15 guide. You will be guided for about 30 minutes nine times a day. The Shounkaku and Amautei are rarely open to the public. Shounkaku is a copy of the Omotesenke Zangettei. Kanu-tei is 5 1/2 tatami mats, but it was impressive.

Tenryu-ji is located near Bamboo Forest. The interior of the buildings is not interesting at all, and the gardens (there is a pond with koi fish) are just OK. You have to pay separately to enter each building and the gardens. So I would give just "3" for Tenryu-ji. However, the evening free stroll in Tenryu-ji (everything was already closed, and there were no crowds) was peaceful and nice. I would recommend enjoying the exterior and not bothering going inside.

In mid-December to four countries self-driving tour, first to visit Osaka, Kyoto to see if there is a chance to appreciate red leaves, silver almond yellow leaves, etc., although it is already late autumn, but due to the high temperature in Japan before December, it also affects the red leaf enjoyment period! In Osaka for several days, there is no chance to see a lot of red leaves, fortunately in Kyoto Temple of the Skylake, most of the leaves have turned red, and there are also a small portion of the gradually changing color yellow leaves to see, it is a pleasure to see, now that the visitors take the time to appreciate and play cards, leave a moment of beauty. The main streets and outskirts outside the temple are also free to enjoy the red leaves, until the dawn eyes with satisfaction leave!

The temple and its garden are magnificent however, the whole experience is spoiled by hoards and hoards of tourists from all over. There is nothing solemn or serene about this place any longer, more like a procession of people going to some hugely popular sports event. I guess it's a must-see in Arashiyama, but it is so over-touristed, it is borderline worth a visit.

Tenryu-ji Zen Buddhist temple is located northwest of Kyoto, accessible via the randen train line, arashiyama stop and then 5 min walk. Huge site, divided into several parts, it is possible to visit the building where the heavenly dragon is located (¥500), the garden (¥500) and the main temple (¥450). We opted for the heavenly dragon and the garden. From the garden we are in the front row to see the temple and interiors and vice versa. We therefore advise you to choose the garden or the temple because from one or the other you will have an unobstructed view of the other. The garden is really pretty, with its pool and maples reflected in it. Towards the exit is a sub-part of the garden, the garden of a thousand flowers where cherry trees are legion and bloom in spring. In good weather the site is beautiful, surrounded by mountains and forests. Allow 45 min to see the whole.

Our hot tip...visit in the late afternoon! We enjoyed a very late afternoon visit to the Temple and it's garden. Probably arrived after 4 pm. To our astonishment most of the day trippers and tourists had dispersed. It was serene, peaceful and our pictures were stunning! Without the hordes of tourists jostling for a photo op. The garden is quite beautiful and take a few minutes to explore. It's well maintained and groomed to perfection. We sat and enjoyed the garden and water feature in relative tranquility.

Of the nice things you can bump into in the Japanese lands, it is a great cultural and religious heritage, very much in the style of my beautiful Mexico, where every municipality no matter how small has a church, and usually preserved and beautiful, because it is the case of Japan. This particular temple has the peculiarity of being the first zen garden that can be counted, and is organized and arranged so that each passing station has a different view. Like many of the sites of interest in the land of the rising sun, there will be twenty thousand things you want to do and few that give you adequate time to do it. This particular temple is very close to the best known and busiest areas of Kyoto, such as gyon and kiomizudera, so if you are in the area, on this site you will find a good place for photos, tranquility, touring temples with straw floors, and the history of the temple. In particular I really enjoy these types of walks even if they cost a couple of yen admission. The conservation, the current state of the site, the commitment that is placed in your care, are all worthy of admiration and your particular visit! Hey but why do you put 4 stars on an experience that consists of visiting a temple??? well, it is too close to a thousand other places of interest and delicious food, so everything makes it conveniently convenient.

The main attraction here no doubt are the lush gardens in traditional Japanese design. It’s also interesting to learn about the history of Bodhidharma, whose picture feels a bit out of place as it reminds one of a comic book character while in fact he was said to have transmitted the Zen teachings from India to China. The main hall has a large painting of a dragon on the ceiling, which is also what the temple is famous for. Be mindful the main hall is not open every day, so in case you are coming for this, do your research on the temple’s website to see what dates the main hall is open to public.

Tenryu-ji temple consists of several buildings. You purchase separate tickets for the main house, the garden, and then the building with the dragon on the ceiling. Having walked through the Nijo Castle, I felt like the main house was underwhelming. That said, there was a large room where you could sit (your shoes were off already) and overlook the garden…that was nice, and we sat for quite a while. The garden was nice…the pond and associated rocks are the stars of the show. The dragon painting on the ceiling is actually quite new (1980’s vintage). I felt like a single admission fee should have covered it all. I would put this on the “if you have time for it” list of things to see in Kyoto…not a “must see.”

I guess Tenryu-ji and the bamboo forest are the 2 key places for anyone coming to Arashiyama. Most enter the main gate coming into the temple and exit via the north gate to go to the bamboo forest.

The place is quiet and some part of it (additional payment) to get into a part of the building where you need to take off your shoes. It's a nice experience if you have never walk on a tatami floor.

The fall color is not something to miss in the garden area of the temple.

I visited on a tour in early January. The admission fee is divided into two parts, for the garden and the main hall, and this time I only visited the garden. The garden is very beautiful and well worth seeing. I think it would be even more worth seeing if you go in the autumn leaves season. As you go further in, you will come across a bamboo forest, which is quite charming.

Beautiful temple that had royal connections. A princess served as the priestess of the temple. Well-maintained Zen Garden with cherry blossoms, well-pruned trees, colourful foliage, clean lines drawn on white sand, flowing streams and calm waters. We made this out last stop in Arashiyama after the bamboo forest and Kameyama Park. There were a lot of people here in the afternoon. We only went into the garden area and did not pay extra to enter the buildings. Many people could sit on the balconies of the main building to enjoy the slightly elevated view. This is a must-visit place when you come to Arashiyama.

Arashiyama's tourist attractions include Togetsukyo Bridge, bamboo groves, and Tenryuji Temple. Tenryu-ji is one of the great mountains of Rinzai sect which is divided into 14 schools. The three highlights are the Sogenchi garden (garden), the Unryu-zu (ceiling painting) and the Daruma-zu (picture), but the garden may be sufficient. Unryu-zu and Daruma-zu are recent works. The garden is large and neatly maintained. You could see beautiful fresh green, but you should be able to see autumn colors if the season matches. The famous photograph of the bamboo grove is not of the inside of Tenryu-ji Temple, but the perimeter of Tenryu-ji Temple.

This was not high on our list until we got there and spent time wandering in the magical garden. We were lucky to experience it with the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom along with a number of different Azaleas in bloom as well. This is a World Heritage Garden and with good reason. IT costs $5 per person but well worth it - We liked it better than the Bamboo walkway!

We visited this place on November 29th. Keep in mind that it can get very crowded here in the fall. You have the option to visit just the garden or the garden and the temple. We had already seen the temple in 2019 and knew that taking a picture of the garden from the inside would be difficult with all the people standing in the garden. The best picture of the immense pond in the garden is better taken at the edge of the sand strip

Tenryu-ji Temple offers a memorable experience! While the temple itself might not be overly striking, the gardens and pond in spring are truly captivating. The array of vibrant colors and diverse flora create a picturesque scene, making it a highlight worth cherishing. Exploring the gardens during this season leaves an indelible impression of Kyoto's natural beauty and tranquility. Don't miss the opportunity to create lasting memories at Tenryu-ji Temple's exquisite gardens and pond.

If you visit during peak foliage, the leaves are a sight to behold and you are in for a real treat. The reds and oranges almost vibrate with color.

Be aware that there are different ticket types - decide what you want to see, how much time you want to spend at the temple and how much you want to pay, and purchase accordingly. We had visited in the past so opted for a garden only ticket.

The long entrance way to the temple is absolutely free and is a wonderful place for photographing the red leaves against the white wall.

Get here early to avoid the crowds. Even so, you need to spend a lot of time in the area around pond to get photographs without people.

We spent a morning visiting the Golden Pavilion, then took a taxi to Tenryuji Temple. Pay for entrance only to the lovely gardens and skip the temple itself. At the top of the gardens, exit to the Bamboo Forest. After the Bamboo Forest, we continued for a short walk along the river to a train station that took us back to the center of Kyoto.
