Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

This is it. When the inbounds rush in, I don't feel like I'm slowly making a pilgrimage. My personal opinion is that I don't want too many people to come, I wonder if they'll come extra because it's free. All but citizens of Kyoto Prefecture should charge admission... Then you wouldn't have to put up all over the grounds asking the world to donate money for restoration... If you collected even 500 yen a person, you could raise hundreds of thousands a day or millions a month in repair costs... Kyoto City residents can get the card free by showing their ID or Individual Number Card. Yumeyume, I don't want you to do anything but imitate the stupidity of paying municipal taxes, which have no merits, like some botanical gardens, that collect uniformly even from the elderly in the prefecture, where it was free for a long time. I think we can do it here because it doesn't matter what prefecture we live in... As for Shinsen-en itself, here it is said that 1,200 years ago, Kukai (Kobo Daishi) prayed for rain for the people suffering from the lack of water. When Kukai called Zennyo Ryuo to the Shinsen-en Garden to pray there, it rained noticeably and the famine was resolved, and this year, Reiwa 6, seems to be the 1200th anniversary of this prayer. It is also one of the legends of Kukai that remains in various parts of Japan. The central vermilion bridge, Hosong Bridge, was also so crowded that it was hard to cross due to the inbound occupation. I'm worried the bridge might fall.

The red bridge (Hojo Bridge) and the clear pond are lovely and impressive, and it is a very valuable place historically. It is now small, but in the Heian period it was a garden for the emperor, and both the pond and the garden were much larger than today. It is said that a dragon god called Zennyo Ryuo lives in the pond, and there is a shrine called Zennyo Ryuo-sha. It is said that if you cross the red bridge with this amulet and make a wish, your wish will come true. When Nijo Castle was built, the scale of Shinsen-en Garden was reduced, so it is naturally possible to reach it on foot. And this one is free. There are very few tourists, and it feels familiar as if it is a walking course for neighbors, so be sure to visit it.

I happened to be having Setsubun Festival (February 3rd every year) on my bike home. The main hall was also open, and the inside of the hall went up. Ryuo-sha Shrine in Watari-ike Pond was also open. Furthermore, Zoun Benzaiten has been unveiled. You can also see the memorial towers and bell towers of Katsumoto Katagiri and Katsushige Itakura. It's been a very lucky day.

Located just south of Nijo Castle, this is a Shingon sect temple and a sub temple from the main temple located in southern Kyoto. This is a lesser known temple . A large pond full of ducks and birds in a beautiful setting. With the Chinese style orange wooden bridges throughout, it is a great place to take photos. Not as busy as some of the other spots. Ideal if you want to take some time with your photos. Go once and then you can say you been there. No need to go twice.

I was heading to the Nijo Castle even if it was about to be closing time, but I wanted to see it illuminated. So I wandered for a while and on my way to the palace I bumped into this stunning treasure. I spent a lot of time to find its name and here I am, sharing with you this little pearl.

We tried to visit the Nijo Castle but it had just closed by the time we got there, so we went for a walk around the surround streets and stumbled upon this tranquil little spot. We spotted the red bridge from the road and spent some time in this beautiful oasis within the normal streets of Kyoto. Worth looking for if you're nearby.

The location is just the side of the Nijyo Castle and walking distance from the Castle. But the Shinsenen garden was much smaller even thogugh the garden was well constracted with a pond and typical Japanese style red bridge over the pond. Unfortunately the water in the pond was not cleanly kept. At the moment it is under the consraction so it is better stay visit only Nijyo Castle.

We have visited Shinsenen by early April after viewing Nijo in the vicinity. The temple cum shrine/garden though smaller in size were nice and comprehensive. Many local people come to worship while others would come to take photos on the beautiful environment.

Accidentally saw this place while biking from Myoshinji to central Kyoto. Beautiful temples (with people actually praying) and a gorgeous garden on the premises. Not overrun by tourists, which is a BIG plus in the tourist season.

Shinsenen was a Shingo Japanese Buddhist Temple initially founded in 824. The size of this temple area had greatly been reduced due to the construction of Nijo Castle nearby. Currently visitors could found a garden and water pond inside apart from an orange-colored bridge thereat. It was said that the garden inside should be the oldest one in Japan. Worth to have a look when you travel to Nijo area.
