The area

Address
Neighborhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

    Lucky encounter
Arashiyama Kimono Forest. We stumbled accidentally on this wonderful find after visiting the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Kimono Forest is a collection of gorgeous cylinder-shaped pillars near the train station on Kyoto’s Keifuku Arashiyama line. The cylinders are covered with colorful historical kimono pattern fabrics. Beautiful. There were kimono shops along the way. Of course, there were folks dressed up to pose for memorable photos. Unfortunately we were here during pouring rain in the morning. The cylinder pillars weren’t lit.

Quick Stop at the Arashiyama Station
The Kimono Forest is at the Arashiyama Station and has 600 Kimonos that are backlit. There is a walking path through it and is worth a quick stop if you have some time to kill if you're waiting for the next tram to come. There are lots of quick bites and shops in the area too before you go to the bamboo forest.

A great break from the crowd
The Kimono Forest in Arashiyama is located at the Randen Arashiyama Train Station- right next to Tully's. Just follow the line of colorful kimono design poles (purples, reds, pinks, and blues with an assortment of designs and patterns). The Kimono Forest path is surround with these poles on both your right and left as you walk down. Walk to the very end and you will find a pond of still water. There is a legend that is passed on which you will have luck if you touch the water in the pond. It is definitely a nice quiet place that is not over crowded to walk through to appreciate the different Japanese colors, designs, and kimono patterns- a diversion from the busy shopping street.

    Kimono forest
Located just outside Arashiyama Station, randen line, the kimono forest consists of an open-air display of kimono in round tubes. Accessible 24 hours a day and free of charge, it is a quick stroll. It is a collection of 600 kimono dresses wrapped around transparent posts with LED lighting inside. It is a decoration project developed by interior designer Yasumichi Morita. See if you're around. Allow 10 min at most.

There are many spots in Kyoto that give you a taste of Kyoto, and this is one of them, so you never get bored no matter how many times you visit. This place gets full of tourists depending on the departure and arrival times of the Arashiyama Railway, but after a while it gets quiet as everyone finishes taking commemorative photos, so if you want to take a decent photo you will need to wait a while. At Arashiyama Railway Shijo-Omiya Station, there is an Arashiyama Railway Arashiyama Station made of Lego blocks, where the Arashiyama Kimono Forest is reproduced (see attached photo), so if you have the chance, why not compare it with this one?

Kimono Forest is a collection of gorgeous cylinder-shaped pillars framing the lane way to Randen tram station on Kyoto’s Keifuku Arashiyama line, which was installed as part of the renovation in 2013. It is called a "forest" since the pillars are clustered like a forest and the kimono is displayed on each of the pillars. The Kimono Forest consists of pieces of textile displays dyed in the traditional Kyo-yuzen style. Each of the 2 meter high pillars are covered with acrylic fiber. There are about 600 of them all installed all over the station grounds. Walk through the kimono lane and you will find a small pond called Ryu no Atago. Ryu no Atago is the energy spot of Arashiyama Station. Many people come here to pray for their dreams and life goals. It is often missed by travellers and it is magical lit up at night.

This charming attraction is in within the Arashiyama Randen line tram Station and is free for the public to access. It covers a small area but have hundreds of colourful kimono patterns in tall cylinder pillars. We get to see the place during daytime and night time as our lodging is very nearby. The best time to visit will be night time, as the pillars are lit up at night.

Recommended to visit this “forest” as it offer an unique picturesque scenery and a break from the usual temples visit.

After visiting the nearby bamboo forest (which was also underwhelming), the Kimono Forest left me wondering why I bothered to visit it. It is a quirky collection of pillars with kimono fabric inside. While it was a bit more interesting at dark, I wouldn't go back.

Another hidden gem in the outskirts of Kyoto. This is a great place to visit after the Hozugawa River Boat Ride. I recommend to visit the Kimono Forest at night. If you're there during the day, go walk through the Bamboo Forest then come back at night!! The poles wrapped in kimono fabric light up at night! Although, it is just a short walk you can find yourself wrapped in the colors and brilliance for quite some time. After the walk through Kimono Forest go to the foot spa for a relaxing massage. The foot spa is only $2. The Kimono Forest is FREEEEE!!! Our visit was before the pandemic so no masks or hand sanitizers were required.

Quite enjoyed this short walk through the pillars, around the fountain, and next to the train tracks. In fact, I actually enjoyed this more than the bamboo forest as it was not only less busy, but in my opinion, a lot more unique. Wish I came here in the evening so I could see the pillars lit up!

Although a small place it provides amazing photos, with plenty of colors. Not a crowded place and it is at the Arashiyama Station.

Different kimono fabrics in transparent tubes. Right next to a small train station. there are benches so you can sit and relax and watch the trains come and go.

Not far from the Bamboo Forest is a train station that has the "Kimono Forest" -- several dozen old kimonos packed into transparent tubes. I wouldn't go way out of my way for this, but if you've already ventured to Arashiyama for the Bamboo Forest, it's a must.
